Once again, the West Genesee girls tennis team finds itself superior to everyone in the Salt City Athletic Conference Metro division except one superpower.
And the Wildcats could see Fayetteville-Manlius again last Tuesday afternoon, two weeks after a 6-1 defeat to them Sept. 4. Here, WG put up another serious challenge, but again lost to the Hornets by a 6-1 margin.
It took Mikayla Mannara and Katie Viau to team up in first doubles to get that point as they beat F-M’s Alexis Ahn and Keara Polovick 6-4, 6-1. The Hornets swept the singles while, in doubles, WG’s Angelina Llanos and Natalie Thurston pushed Rachel Liu and Martha Welker to a third set in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 defeat.
The Wildcats met Liverpool last Monday and pushed past the Warriors 5-2. Viau, beating Julia Schewe 6-2, 6-2, began a singles sweep where Mannara topped Angelica Underwood 6-4, 6-1 and Anastasia Mello had a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kelly Geiwitz.
The doubles matches were split as Emma Pinker and Mi Tran could not hold on in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 defeat to Aryanna Davila and Crystal Morgans. But Llanos and Thurston turned back Diana Kazenyatko and Gabby Underwood 6-1, 6-2 as Alyssa Congel paired with Emma Yeager to beat Olivia Magnarelli and Cindy Tran 6-1, 6-1.
In WG’s 6-1 win over Homer on Thursday, every point was claimed in two sets. Mannara routed Marlena Kruman 6-2, 6-0 and Viau stopped Catrina Kruman 6-3, 6-1. Llanos and Mello handled Molly Burhans and Ellis Han 6-2, 6-2, the closest of the doubles matches.
Marcellus claimed a 7-0 win over Pulaski last Monday. Kathleen DeMarie beat Chaynna LaCelle 6-1, 6-2, while Danielle Copp handled Cassie McGregor 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Elaina Mahoney and Megan Mitchell won, 6-3, 6-4, over Lauren Denny and Chelcie Oakes, with Kaitlyn Kemp and Morgan Walsh stopping Rhyana Kveton and Olivia Taylor 6-3, 6-2.
Bella Clarke and Casey Conklin had a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Julia Hefti and Isabella Pierce as Sophia Shaw and Maddie Vetsch won, 6-2, 6-1, over Holly Pacyon and Jessica Yesensky.
It turned completely around last Wednesday with the Mustangs falling 7-0 to Skaneateles. Only one of those matches went to three sets, with Kemp and Walsh unable to hang on in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat to Riley Fouts and Bridget Neumann. ‘
Playing again on Thursday, Marcellus handled Mexico 6-1. Amid a doubles sweep, Shaw and Vetsch survived a third-set tie-breaker to edge Alivia Kelsey and Emma Teeter 6-0, 1-6, 7-6, with DeMarie and Marsh picking up singles points.
Westhill met Homer last Monday and lost 4-3 to the Trojans as Cami Cortez and Mikayla Carroll lost in singles, but Grace Lesselroth worked past Marlena Kruman 6-3, 6-2.
Carmille Argentieri and Zoe Hynes survived a third-set tie-breaker to edge Molly Burhans and Ellis Hahn 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, with Hannah Johnston and Bridget Thornton beating Jane Durham and Josie Williams 6-4, 6-4.
In the Warriors’ 7-0 loss to unbeaten Christian Brothers Academy, the Brothers won every set of every match. Against Chittenango on Wednesday, Westhill lost another 4-3 match, with Lesselroth beating Anna Rooney 6-2, 6-2 as Cortez routed Sarah Lamphear 6-1, 6-2.
Argentieri and Hynes got a 6-3, 6-4 doubles win over Shelby Maring and Brenna Stanton, but the Bears got the crucial point when Riley Ellis, in third singles, outlasted Sophia Frost 6-4, 2-6, 10-7.
On Friday, Westhill needed help from a forfeit to Richmond in singles to top Phoenix 4-3, but still had the doubles teams of Argentieri-Hynes, Cortez-Lesselroth and Langdon-Thomas each win in straight sets.
Jordan-Elbridge got close against Mexico, only to lose 4-3. The Eagles’ Maria LaFleur won a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 battle with Alivia Kelsey as Maddie Green defeated Grace Mason 6-2, 6-4.
Needing two points out of doubles, J-E only earned one, from Anisa Bort and Meghan Whalen as they beat Juliana Hernandez and Mia Morris in another 6-2, 6-4 match. The pivotal match in doubles saw Bella DeCola and Gabrielle Skotinski get within two games, only to fall to Catrina Edwards and Shelby Schumacher 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Then J-E lost 7-0 to CBA, but beat Phoenix 4-3 Thursday with a doubles sweep, one of them a forfeit. The teams of Bort-Whalen, and Delaney Dunham-Megan Hatt each won in two sets, but DeCola and Skotinski got pushed to a third-set tie-breaker, only to edge past Ella Heckert and Morgan Kosakowski 6-4, 4-6, 7-6.
Against Bishop Grimes on Friday, J-E got doubles wins from Bort-Whalen, DeCola-Skotinski and Skylar Crysler-Katelyn Precourt, but lost 4-3 when it got swept in singles and had Delaney Dunham and Megan Hatt fall 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to Lenora Cendrone and Abby Wilkinson.
