Before hitting the heart of its schedule, the Cazenovia girls tennis team built its win total in the waning days of August, including its 7-0 shutout of the Jordan-Elbridge Eagles.
Neither Alex Galle nor Laura Connor lost a game in singles as Galle handled Meghan Whalen 6-0, 6-0 and Connor topped Anisa Bort by those same scores. Emmie Dolbear took a bit longer, but beat Maria LaFleur 6-0, 6-4.
Some of the doubles action proved close. Julia Knutsen and Baylee Pierce needed two tough sets to beat Skylar Crysler and Marissa Reith 7-5, 6-4 as Clare Douglas and Ella Koch got a tiebreaker early and went on to win, 7-6, 6-0, over Hayley Holland and Katelyn Precourt.
By contrast, Abby Burrell and Charley Harris blanked Delaney Dunham and Megan Hatt 6-0, 6-0, just as Kaitlyn Puffer and Nina Royer handled Bella DeCola and Maddie Green 6-2, 6-3.
In another 7-0 romp over Pulaski last Tuesday, Galle, Connor and Dolbear all won in singles without dropping a game. One doubles match was forfeited, but Douglas and Koch won, 6-0, 6-0, over Julia Hefti and Isabella Pierce as Burrell and Harris handled Lauren Denny and Chelcie Oakes 6-1, 6-1, with Puffer and Royer handling Madison Hanks and Holly Paycon 6-2, 6-0.
Cazenovia had another victory on Friday, topping Mexico 5-2 with yet another singles sweep. Galle blanked Juliana Hernandez 6-0, 6-0, with Dolbear topping Grace Mason by those same scores as Connor handled Kim Heagerty 6-0, 6-1.
Meanwhile, in doubles, Burrell and Harris got a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mia Morris and Destiny Teachout. In three sets, Puffer and Royer held off Catrina Edwards and Caitlyn Hackett 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
It nearly was a sweep, but two other doubles matches were dropped in three sets. Douglas and Koch had a 6-2, 4-6, 11-9 defeat to Alivia Kelsey and Emma Teeter, with Knutsen and Pierce falling to Shelby Schumacher and Juliana Smith 6-7, 6-4, 10-5.
Chittenango was back on the court last Tuesday to face Phoenix, where the Bears dominated the three contested doubles matches and used that as a foundation for a 5-2 win over the Firebirds.
Shelby Maring and Brenna Stanton rolled past Katelyn Carbonaro and Mia Graham 6-0, 6-1, with Riley Ellis and Sarah Lanphear topping Ella Heckert and Morgan Kosakowski 6-0, 6-0. Chloe Foran and Katie Simmons claimed a forfeit as Leah Demauro and Bella Toscano handled Mackenzie VanAuken and Courtney Worden 6-3, 6-2.
Up in singles, Chittenango’s Anna Rooney fell to Brielle DeRoberts 7-5, 6-2. Two games from a singles point, Delaney Dawkins lost, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, to Gianna DeRoberts, but Brooke DiFlorio did prevail over Ashley Kenner-Carbonaro.
Chittenango also beat Marcellus 5-2, the key to it a pair of singles matches that went to three sets. DiFlorio came back to top Megan Mitchell 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, with Dawkins getting a 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win over Kathleen DeMarie.
Rooney beat Megan Mitchell 6-1, 6-2, to complete the singles sweep. The doubles matches were split as Stanton and Maring routed Danielle Copp and Colleen Marsh 6-1, 6-2, while Keelin Davie and Abbie Austin beat Maddie Vestch and Casey Conklin 6-1, 6-2.
On Thursday, Chittenango blanked Jordan-Elbridge 7-0, with Dawkins defeating Anisa Bort 6-3, 7-6 in singles as Rooney won, 6-1, 6-4 over Meghan Whalen and DiFlorio handling Wendy Carter 6-0, 6-1.
In the closest of the four doubles matches, Davie and Austin won, 6-3, 6-4, over Maddie Green and Katelyn Precourt, with the teams of Maring-Stanton, Ellis-Lanphear and Chloe Foran-Katie Simmons also prevailing in two sets.
