There were many different ways to measure the Skaneateles boys lacrosse teams’ 13-12 overtime defeat to General Brown last Saturday afternoon in Dexter.
On one front, it was another frustrating afternoon for the Lakers, who fell to 7-8 on the season. However, it was also a sign that Skaneateles could stay right with a championship contender.
General Brown entered the game sitting at no. 3 in the state Class D rankings, yet still facing questions about its quality since it plays in the Frontier League, generally considered a weaker division than the Onondaga High School League
And even though the Lions beat Westhill earlier this season, the skepticism seemed accurate when Skaneateles, fresh from a full week’s rest, played a steady, strong first half to build a 7-4 lead.
But GB fought back, outscoring the Lakers 5-2 in the third quarter to catch up. It then went back and forth in the fourth quarter, neither side able to win it as they traded goals.
At 12-12, it went to OT, where the Lions gained possession and, with 1:35 left in the extra period, Bryce Johnson fired it past Scott Oschner for the game-winner, his second goal to go with three assists.
Pat Hackler led Skaneateles with three goals and four assists. John Danforth also scored three times for a hat trick as Ryan Gick and Nick Wamp had two goals apiece. Single goals went to Will McGlynn and Brendan Powers.
Oschner finished with 14 saves, yet he could not do much against the Lions’ top scorer, Corey O’Connor, who had six goals and one assist. GB goalie Carson Pickeral had 18 saves.
In order to finish the regular season at the .500 mark, Skaneateles would have to beat visiting Tully Tuesday night at Hyatt Stadium, after which it would find out where it would start the Section III Class D playoffs.
