Passing the midway point of their regular seasons, area girls lacrosse teams remained active during the school break, and in one instance had a big neighborhood showdown.
It came last Thursday as Marcellus and Westhill squared off, reuniting new Mustangs head coach Zach Iancello with the Warriors, where he was an assistant coach for two seasons under Brittany Brigandi.
As it turned out, if Marcellus had extra knowledge about Westhill’s tendencies, it didn’t help them too much.
The Warriors controlled matters from start to finish and beat the Mustangs 19-5, mostly leaning on a four-pronged attack that shredded apart a usually stout Marcellus defense.
Rebecca Gilhooley, by herself, outscored the Mustangs by pouring in six goals, and Caroline Miller scored five times, each of them adding an assist. Then Katelyn Karleski managed four goals and one assist as Reilly Geer had three goals and one assist.
Katherine McPeak, with two assists, and Kendra MacCaull, with one goal and one assist, helped out as no Marcellus player scored more than once, with Katherine Locastro, Anna Vetsch, Taylor Reich, Lily Powell and Katy Wangsness getting those goals.
Before all this, Marcellus and Westhill both had important games, including the Mustangs going out on April 22 and defeating Section II’s Shenendehowa by a score of 16-9.
Shen had lost to Baldwinsville the day before, and Marcellus would continue the Plainsmen’s pain, especially Anna Vetsch, who set a season mark by scoring seven goals.
Powell chimed in with a three-goal hat trick, while Wangsness scored twice. Madison Green had one goal and two assists as Locastro and Sarah Hutchings also found the net.
Westhill played last Tuesday against LaFayette and routed the Lancers 17-6, steadily producing goals throughout the night and taking over as it went on a 9-2 tear through the second half.
Gilhooley and Miller each scored four times, Gilhooley adding three assists and Miller two assists. Karleski had three goals and one assist as Geer and Gianna Zerillo each got two goals and two assists. Maura McAnaney and Ryan Murphy had one goal apiece, McAnaney and McPeak getting assists.
The combined Bishop Ludden/Bishop Grimes/Onondaga team returned to action last Thursday and lost a tight 12-11 decision to LaFayette, the game tied 6-6 at halftime and remaining close all the way to the end.
Emma Driscoll, Gabby Oswald and Rhonee Shea Pal each had three goals for Ludden/Grimes/OCS, with Driscoll adding three assists and Oswald two assists. Emily Monroe scored twice as Peyton Hall recorded 12 saves. For the Lancers, Charlotte Ryan (five goals, two assists) and Mya DeJoseph (four goals, one assist) led the way.
