With the snowy weather lingering into the third week of April, the area high school boys tennis schedule was severely curtailed, perhaps not to resume at full bore until after the school break.
But the sun did break through on Friday long enough for West Genesee to take on Central Square and claim all the points during a 7-0 victory over the Redhawks.
In the closest of the three singles matches, the Wildcats’ James Plunkett beat Ethan Westfall 7-5, 6-3. Matt Mannara handled Logan Foster 6-1, 6-1 as Noah Ruston worked past Kevin Kershner 6-2, 6-0.
To start the doubles sweep, WG’s Stefan Atanasov and John Northrop topped Edwin Ogren and Jared Smith 6-2, 6-0. Ryan Joyce and Erik Shanahan had a 6-1, 6-0 romp over Austin Grosso and Spencer Wells as Max Mekker and Michael White topped Lukas Capstraw and Jacob Kloter 6-3, 6-1. By those same 6-3, 6-1 scores, Carter McCrea and Ben Paoli beat Kody Haywood and Skyler Williams.
Then WG took on Cicero-North Syracuse Saturday and won again, toppling the Northstars 6-1 mostly on the basis of a doubles sweep.
Atansov and Northrop handled Kyle Bulko and Evan Haberek 6-1, 6-4, with Joyce and Shanahan topping Jon Corl and Brandon Millias 7-5, 6-2. Mekker and White had a 6-3, 6-3 win over Ryan Gallagher and Ryan Hill as McCrea paired with Anthony DeLorenzo to beat Joe Bowen and Jack Doren 6-1, 6-3.
Up in singles, Ruston lost, 6-4, 7-6, to C-NS’s Wyatt Dupell, but the Wildcats earned the other points as Mannara handled Edwin Hirsh 6-1, 6-1 and Plunkett beat James Corl 6-2, 6-1.
Westhill got in a pair of matches on Friday and won them both, shutting out Skaneateles 5-0 and handling Mexico 4-1.
Against the Lakers, Jackson Bradley got it going in singles with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Duncan Raddant. Mike Ferrera beat Dan Judge 6-4, 6-1, while David Bleskoski turned back Jack Belinski 6-4, 6-4.
Tom Chaddock, paired with Ryan Rolince, won in doubles over Nate Fouts and Andrew Neumann 6-2, 6-2, followed up by Connor Mahoney and Nick Sauro topping Chris Burgher and Anthony Panasci 6-0, 6-2.
The Mexico match saw Bradley lose in singles to the Tigers’ Joe Ocker 6-1, 6-2, but Westhill won everything else, starting with Ferrara beating John Ocker 6-1, 6-4 as Bleskoski got past Evan Blunt 6-4, 6-3.
Both doubles matches were also won in two sets, with Chaddock and Rolince getting a 6-2, 6-0 win over Connor Shafer and Matt Shaw as Mahoney and Sauro handled Jacob Hill and Eric Hyde 6-1, 6-1.
Marcellus did get in a match last Wednesday against Cazenovia, unable to get on the board in a 5-0 defeat to the Lakers.
In second doubles, the Mustangs’ Justin Costa and Tyler Guerina led early, but could not hold on to it, taking a 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 loss to Griffin Monahan and Aiden Kalteski.
Shawn Manke and Noah LaFever lost, 6-2, 6-1, to Teddy Coughlin and Dan Gavilondo, with Con Clarke and Chris Barbaro unable to earn games in their respective singles matches and Andrew Kammer falling to Nate Romig 6-2, 6-1.
