It has not taken long for the Fayetteville-Manlius girls swim team to establish itself as the front-runners in the Salt City Athletic Conference.
The Hornets passed one of its biggest tests last Friday at the Le Moyne College pool, when it turned back Cicero-North Syracuse 87-75 to improve its mark to 3-0.
Taking the lead at the outset, F-M had Katie Ottaviano, Addie Antshel, Lindsay Mathews and Cara Campell go through the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:00.41, while Morgan Kingsley, Sasha Brown, Saya Hrosar and Emma Reed were second in 2:01.31.
Mathews went from there to claiming the 500 freestyle in 5:40.30 and finishing second in the 200 freestyle (2:08.08) behind teammate Hannah Kellogg, who won in 2:05.55. In the 100 freestyle, it was Kellogg in second place (58.01 seconds) as Campell prevailed in 57.48 seconds.
In her sweep of the sprints, Campell, in 25.77 seconds, beat out Brown (26.51) in the 50 freestyle. Antshel went 1:06.26 to win the 100 butterfly as part of a 1-2-3 sweep with Reed (1:09.77) and Nicole Menz (1:13.05), with Antshel also taking second place in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.82.
Kellogg, Campell, Brown and Michelle Sipple worked together to win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.35 to C-NS’s 1:48.56. Mairead Egan swam the 100 backstroke in 1:09.45, just one-hundredth of a second behind C-NS’s Sarah Walter (1:09.44) as Ottaviano improved her 100 breaststroke time to 1:14.84.
Now, having already beaten Jamesville-DeWitt on Sept. 12, F-M sought a local sweep when it returned to Le Moyne and took on Christian Brothers Academy Tuesday night. That didn’t prove too difficult, the Hornets overwhelming the Brothers in a 108-78 decision.
In the first individual race, Kellogg helped F-M go in front for good, winning the 200 freestyle in 2:04.38. Two races later, in the 50 freestyle, the Hornets got a top-three sweep as Campell, in 25.76 seconds, beat out Kingsley (27.02) and Reed (27.92) in the next two spots.
Riley Miller picked up 227.80 points in diving to hold off CBA’s Sam Lanzafame (215.10) for the title as Francisco Femia (190.35) edged Alessandra Manicone (189.20 points) for third place.
Another 1-2-3 sweep for the Hornets came in the 500 freestyle, with Mathews, in 5:41.33, just ahead of Kellogg (5:42.54) and Hrosar (5:54.76) in third place. To cap off the effort, F-M had Kellogg, Campell, Sipple and Brown again win the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.57.
CBA still had its fair share of wins, including two of the relays. Juila Torell, Lauren Kelly, Grace O’Connor and Kaitlyn Bushnell went 1:58.33 to easily claim the 200 medley relay as Kelly and Torrell joined Darien Tompkins and Katelyn Wendt to edge F-M, 3:53.06 to 3:53.08, in a close 400 freestyle relay.
Individually, Kelly, in 2:22.64, held off Antshel (2:24.87) in a close 200 IM race and won the 100 breaststroke in 1;09.90, while Torell pulled away to take the 100 butterfly in 1:01.85 and went 1:05.92 to prevail in the 100 backstroke. Tompkins, in 57.38 seconds, pulled ahead of Campell (57.98) in the 100 freestyle.
Meanwhile, J-D visited Baldwinsville and handled the Bees 51-36, led by Alexis Phillips, who won the 50 freestyle in 26.74 seconds and swam the fastest 100 breaststroke time of 1:16.38 as Amelia Hesler went through the 100 backstroke in 1:04.60 and won the 100 butterfly in 1:04.37.
