Even as the Cazenovia girls volleyball team was rolling to a 4-0 start with only one dropped set along the way, it was noticing that its namesakes from Skaneateles were going 6-0, claiming three of those matches in five-set battles with Marcellus, Solvay and Homer.
All of this added plenty of meaning to Tuesday night’s trip to Skaneateles, but it was clear from the outset which Laker side still had the upper hand as Cazenovia rolled to a three-set victory.
During the first two sets, little went wrong for Cazenovia as it won by scores of 25-14 and 25-9. The third set proved much closer, but Skaneateles could not extend the match as the visiting Lakers closed it out, 25-22.
Cazenovia had plenty of standouts, including Delaney Yorks, who earned 24 assists and eight digs. Morgan Hodinger managed 10 kills, 11 digs and four aces as Lindsey Lawson and Madison West had five kills apiece.
Libero Lauren Burbidge earned six aces and six digs. Ava Brennan and Ryleigh Tillison had four kills apiece, with Laura Clements earning three kills and five digs.
For Skaneateles, Karah Blair finished with 11 digs and Rachel Smith got seven digs, with Sarah Delasin adding five digs. Lily Delasin also had five digs to go with six assists as Cassidy Pitman had nine assists, four digs and three kills. Jessica Patalino had six kills and Mia Grasso contributed five kills.
Just 24 hours later, Cazenovia played again and swept Institute of Technology Central with 25-10 decisions in the first and third sets, with a 25-18 second set in between.
Eight different Lakers had 17 aces between them, with Burbidge’s four aces leading the way. Hodinger still had time to earn 10 kills as Lawson produced five kills, with Yorks getting 18 assists and three aces. Alexis Sherwood had three kills, joining Hodinger, Lawson and Mackenzie Odell in earning two aces apiece.
Back at Buckley Gym Friday night, Cazenovia took out Hamilton in straight sets 25-9, 25-11, 25-11. Hodinger had eight kills and Lawson picked up seven kills as West added four kills. Burbidge and Tillison got three aces apiece as Yorks recorded 22 assists.
Then the Lakers played Saturday in the Victor Tournament, with another tournament appearance in Baldwinsville slated for this Saturday following matches against Phoenix and Solvay.
