Many more games remain, in many different conditions, but it’s doubtful that the Fayetteville-Manlius girls lacrosse team will have to endure as much as it did in last Thursday night’s epic battle at Marcellus.
Through 50 minutes of regulation and two overtime periods, the Hornets and Mustangs dueled it out, never separating on the scoreboard as the rain poured and the cold wind made things more uncomfortable, and it only ended when Gemma Addonizio’s goal in the third OT gave F-M an 11-10 victory.
The entire game was a back-and-forth affair. Every run was answered in kind, and the two sides were even, 6-6, at halftime, staying that way through a tense second half as the Mustangs and Hornets each scored four times.
At 10-10, it went to OT, but one period was not enough to settle it, nor was a second extra period. Then, in the third OT, Addonizio, the sophomore forward who already had a three-goal hat trick, beat Rebecca Nutting for the game-winner. Prior to that, Nutting had made eight saves.
Addonizio got help from Kiera Shanley, who scored three times and added a pair of assists, and Katie Shanley, who recorded five assists while joining Amanda Cramer, Allison Macrae and Maya Chiesa in earning single goals.
Grace Coon, who surpassed 100 career points in that C-NS game, led the Mustangs with four goals and one assist, while Abby Vetsch, Colette Rigas and Maddie Conklin earned two goals apiece, though F-M goalie Maria Angello got seven saves.
On Saturday afternoon, the Hornets looked for its third straight win against Fairport (Section V), and despite the possible fatigue from the long battle with Marcellus, F-M was quite impressive in a 19-7 victory over the Red Raiders, notching 15 goals in the first half alone.
Katie Shanley earned four goals and three assists, with Amanda Cramer getting five goals and one assist. Kiera Shanley scored three times as Addonizio got two goals and three assists. Sydney DeGirolamo got two goals and one assist. Annie Steigerwald, Kaylee Steigerwald and Madeline Noel also scored, with Jane Cote contributing an assist.
All of this leads to a big showdown Wednesday between 3-0 F-M and 3-0 West Genesee, the Hornets’ only game this week.
