In order to keep its hold atop the Onondaga High School League Liberty division, the Cazenovia girls tennis team needed to endure a real battle in last Tuesday’s match against Westhill before prevailing by a 4-3 margin over the Warriors.
Of the three singles matches, two went in the Lakers’ direction. Alex Galle handled Katherine Missert 6-2, 6-0, while Meg Milmoe had similar results, beating Avery Yeates 6-2, 6-1, though Summer Steinhorst had a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) defeat to Giovanna Buccina.
Westhill made things interesting in doubles, where Annaka Bruno and Lizzy Druke fell to Grace and Katie Lesselroth 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Thus, two points were needed, and after the duo of Jana Harris and Abby Burrell prevailed, Lucy and Laura Connor got the clinching point when they beat Abbey Mullen and Lydia Stevenson 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Two days later, Cazenovia earned a 6-1 victory over Bishop Grimes, which included a three-set singles match where Julie Silverman could not hold on in a 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 defeat the Cobras’ Katie Knittel.
However, Langan prevailed in singles, 6-4, 6-4, over Liz Wolaver, while Steinhorst paired with Laura Connor to beat Mary Castricone and Gina Martin 6-1, 6-0 as Druke and Lucy Connor handled Olivia Minor and M Marturano 6-0, 6-1.
