Girls tennis Lakers nearly get sweep

Jumping into another week of OHSL Liberty National division matches, the Skaneateles girls tennis team found complete success in last Monday’s match against Pulaski at Austin Park, putting together a 7-0 shutout of the Blue Devils.

Alex Ditch did not allow a game in her 6-0, 6-0 singles romp over Andrea Geer. It didn’t take much longer for Rachel Feeney to push past Delilah Mehallow 6-0, 6-1, while Erica Byrne worked through a tough first set, but beat Jennifer Lapp 6-3, 6-0.

The Lakers also rolled through each of the doubles matches in straight sets, starting with Angela Krause and Mary McNeil getting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cerenity Geer and Alexis Bowen, and continuing with Hope Allyn and Lily Datz beating Matthews andSavannah Goodsell 6-0, 6-2.

Isabella Kroon, pairing with Hope Glowacki, rolled past Casey Lyne and Sarah McCray 6-0, 6-1, right ahead of Biver and Brinley Walawender putting up their own 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pulaski’s team of Carla Soules and Kiara Sperling.

Looking for its fifth win in a row, Skaneateles faced Phoenix on Wednesday and attained with a 6-1 romp over the Firebirds, Ditch needed three sets to get past Catherine Musumeci 7-5, 1-6, 6-3, and while Byrne lost to Gianna DeRoberts 6-4, 6-1, McNeil, playing singles, rolled past Brielle DeRoberts 6-0, 6-4.

None of the doubles matches posted any sort of problems. Feeney and Krause blanked Lauren Schmidt and Ashley Kenner-Carbonaro 6-0, 6-0, with Datz and Allyn handling Bryn Demong and Molly Thorn 6-3, 6-1. Isabella Kroon and Hope Glowacki got a 6-2, 6-0 win over Elissa Fordyce and Katelyn Carbonaro as Biver and Walawender won again, 6-2, 6-3, over Marissa Moore and Larissa Semanchuk-Enser.

To close this busy week, the first-place Lakers took on Chittenango Friday afternoon, and got close to another win, only to see the Bears claim a pair of three-set matches that made the difference in a 4-3 defeat.

McNeil got a singles point when she beat Jessie Gilbert 6-2, 6-4. Ditch trailed early, but rallied past Emma Bailey 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, and in a crucial singles match Byrne hung tough with Chittenango’s Kelly Gloo, but lost a 6-4, 4-6,6-4 verdict.

Moving to doubles, Biver and Walawender were successful, beating Meghan Pexton and Nadia Cannistra 6-3, but the Lakers never got that second point. Kroon and Glowacki lost, 6-1, 6-1, to Allie Choi and Coralee Everett, with Datz and Allyn unable to claim a long second-set tie-breaker against Rachel Cleary and Mya Streiff in a 6-2, 7-6 (11-9) decision.

So it all depended on first doubles, where Krause and Feeney won a first-set tie-breaker over Shannon Koegel and Anna Norman, yet could not follow up that effort as Koegel and Norman went on to take a 6-7 (7-4), 6-1, 6-4 decision.

The loss dropped Skaneateles to 7-2 overall, 6-1 in the OHSL Liberty division, still good for first place as it awaited a Wednesday rematch with Pulaski and hosts Jordan-Elbridge on Friday.
