Girls tennis Bees nab point against F-M

Baldwinsville’s duo of Katherine Cassidy and Gabby Fiello accomplished what no one else in high school girls tennis had done this season – take a point away from Fayetteville-Manlius.

Like so many other foes, the Bees were overwhelmed by the undefeated Hornets in last Monday’s showdown. But at least in doubles, B’ville nabbed a match to make the 6-1 defeat a bit easier to take.

What was even more impressive about Cassidy and Fiello’s efforts was the way it happened. They lost the first set to F-M’s Martha Welker and Gretchen Ayoub 6-0, only to take the second set 6-3 and, two games from defeat, finish strong to claim the third set 7-5.

Elsewhere, it proved a struggle. Jennifer Stone and Taylor Collado lost, 6-3, 6-2, to Maggie Bonomo and Diana Polovock, with Abby Coogan and Alina Minkova falling to Katerina Atallah and Patrice Calancie 6-1, 6-2. Riley Warren and Yasha Parawar lost to RachelLiu and Abby Charlamb 6-0, 6-1.

Up in singles, it proved no different, F-M sweeping all three matches. Brooke Tutor fell to Kristina Liu 6-3, 6-0, with Paige Tromblee falling to Keara Polovick 6-0, 6-1 as Lauren Devine had a 6-3, 6-1 defeat to Anna Manta.

B’ville quickly bounced back with wins on back-to-back days, starting Wednesday with a 7-0 shutout over Syracuse East where Tromblee had to go three sets to beat Eve Llanos 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, though Minkova and Collado each won 6-0, 6-0 singles decisions over, respectively, Nyuy Pham and Kelly Huynh.

Stone and Tutor paired up in doubles, getting their own 6-0, 6-0 win over Nyuy Pham and Amrita Rai. Coogan and Devine beat Meiling Le and Robika Zathang 6-1, 6-3, with Cassidy and Fiello topping Saba Abdulwaned and Fatimah Alowaid by those same scores. Allison Delaney and Madeline Ferguson beat McKenzie Napel and Aya Ali 6-2, 6-1.

B’ville kept going Thursday with a 6-1 win over Cicero-North Syracuse, which put the Bees’ team record, ironically enough, at 6-1 before it faces Syracuse West Monday and a rematch Wednesday in Camillus with the same West Genesee side it beat 5-2 earlier this month.
