For the second time in as many weeks, the Marcellus girls lacrosse team went on the road and challenged a noted Class A opponent.
But unlike its May 3 defeat to state no. 1-ranked CBA, the Mustangs found success at Fayetteville-Manlius, overcoming a halftime deficit to record a 12-10 victory over the Hornets.
Though it struggled in the first half, Marcellus didn’t let F-M get away, only trailing 6-4 at the break. Then, led by Grace Coon, Maddie Conklin and Abby Vetsch, the Mustangs used it speed and skill to get through the Hornets’ defenders in the second half and take charge.
Coon finished with four goals and three assists, with Conklin and Vetsch each finding the net three times. Katherine Locastro had one goal and one assist, with Collette Rigas adding a goal as Olivia Bird added an assist.
Westhill, who at no. 14 was one spot ahead of Marcellus (no. 15) in the state Class C rankings, made a case to move up in an impressive all-around effort against Class B contender Jamesville-DeWitt last Tuesday night, the Warriors routing the Red Rams 19-9.
Five different Westhill players earned hat tricks. Natalie Jetter scored four times, adding an assist, while Shelby Stack had three goals and two assists. Three others – Abby Stack, Erin McMullen and Haileigh Farrell – each finished with three goals and one assist. Caroline Miller added two goals and one assist as Rebecca Gilhooley also found the net.
Then Westhill would move up to Class A competition again on Friday when it took on Liverpool. In this Warrior clash, Westhill looked to match what Marcellus did against F-M the night before – and did just that, rolling to a 16-8 victory.
From start to finish, Westhill used its depth and athleticism to wear Liverpool down, leading 9-5 by halftime and playing even better after the break, led by Shelby Stack, who scored five times and added an assist.
McMullen and Jetter netted three goals apiece, while Sam VanBuren had a goal and three assists. Farrell converted twice as Miller and Abby Stack got goals and Gihooley contributed an assist. Morgan Hayes anchored the defense and picked up nine saves.
Jordan-Elbridge’s 9-5 start earned them the no. 20 spot in the latest state Class C rankings. Celebrating that accomplishment, J-E hit double digits in the win column last Monday by dancing past the combined Syracuse City squad 17-9, a game that was close for a while before the Eagles outscored Syracuse 9-4 in the second half.
Four different J-E players earned hat tricks as Miranda Malvaso got four goals and one assist. Alexis Switzer and Emily Somes each had three goals and two assists, while Marissa Malvaso also scored three times.
Katie Goodrich and Antonia Malvaso each got one goal and one assist as Alexis Braun and Emily Kuenhle managed single goals. Allison Jennings added an assist. Goalie Anna Bozeat recorded seven saves.
Two days later, J-E ended the regular season at Cazenovia, and was on the brink of a major win when, in the latter part of the second half, it all fell apart and the Eagles took a 13-12 defeat to the Lakers.
An evenly played first half saw J-E inch into a 7-6 lead, but it added to that margin thanks to three goals from Antonia Malvaso and help from her teammates. Marissa Malvaso had two goals and one assist, with Switzer and Kuenhle each earning a goal and two assists. Goodrich, Somes, Alexis Braun, Allison Jennings and Miranda Malvaso earned single goals.
Somehow, Cazenovia overcame this with a charge in the last 12 minutes, and Chloe Willard had a lot to do with it, raising her total to seven goals. No other Lakers player had more than the two goals put up by Keara Dwyer.
Bishop Ludden-Bishop Grimes could not keep up with LaFayette in last Tuesday’s 17-9 defeat, only trailing by two at halftime before the Lancers outscored them 10-4 in the second half.
Emma Driscoll scored three goals, while Molly McInerney earned two goals and one assist. Grace Lambrych added a goal and assist as Sidney Dobbins, Rhonee Shea Pal and Katy McInerney had the other goals. For LaFayette, Kaitlin Rurka had six goals and one assist, while Charlotte Ryan got five goals and one assist. Mya DeJoseph had four goals.
Two days later, Ludden-Grimes lost, 17-6, to Skaneateles, a game decided early as the Lakers bolted to a 10-1 halftime lead.
Driscoll still had two goals, with Katy McInerney adding a goal and two assists. Molly McInerney scored, too, as did Lambrych and Taj Huddleston. Hannah Logan and Mae McGlynn led Skaneateles with three goals apiece as Emma Goodell added two goals and two assists.
