Cazenovia had started its week by seeing its boys track and field team go to East Syracuse Minoa for last Monday’s Specialty Qualifying Meet, achieving several top finishes by day’s end.
In the unique 4×100 relay event for throwers, the Lakers won as Nate Spangler, Chad Carges, Pat Frisbey and Angelo Annotto got a time of 51.16 seconds to top Tully (52.34 seconds) and the field.
Spangler was eighth (35 feet 7 inches) and Carges ninth (34’4”) in the shot put, but Will Kmetz made it to sixth place in the discus, throwing it 100 feet 8 inches as Christian Winkler was eighth (98’10”) and Annotto was 11th with a top throw of 97’4”.
The more conventional 4×100 relay had Sean McPherson, Elijah Wellington-Harper, Dan McKillop and Jake Robbins get second place in 47.66 seconds behind ESMs’ 56.20 seconds. Robbins, on his own, tied for sixth in the high jump, clearing 5’2”.
James McPherson went 11:06.3 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and rose to third place. Sam DeLeon cleared 10 feet in the pole vault to tie for fifth as Christian Winkler got ninth place.
Saulo Ferraria had an eighth-place finish in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.41 and was 11th in the 110 high hurdles, with Robbie Zambito and Andrew Ryan 11th and 13th, respectively, in the 400 hurdles. Ray Satchwell got an eighth-place triple jump of 34’10 ¼ and also, with a top attempt of 17’4 ½”, held off Alec Boone (17’4”) for 13th place in the long jump.
Then came a league meet on Wednesday at Hannibal, with Cazenovia’s girls defeating the host Warriors 105-36 and also routing the Solvay Bearcats 112-29.
Clara Rowles, in 5:03.5, beat out Meggie Hart (5:05.0) in the 1,500. Rowles went on to win the 800 in 2:34.4 and finished second in the 3,000 to Hart, who prevailed in 11:43.7.
Maria Stalder needed 1:02.7 for first place in the 400 sprint, with Kirsten Underwood edging Hannibal’s Taylor Dence, 27.5 seconds to 27.7, in the 200 after finishing second in the 100. Underwood, Brenna Hughes, Delaney Yates and Jess Macheda won the 4×100 relay in 52.6 seconds as Hart, Rowles, Stalder and Jamie Joseph took the 4×800 in 10:30 flat.
Moving to field events, Maddy Gavitt won three events, going 32’11” in the triple jump and 15’1” in the long jump and tying Tori Fischer in the high jump, each clearing 4’10”. Katie Robbins topped 8 feet in the pole vault and Joseph won the shot put, throwing it 29’6”.
The boys meet between Cazenovia, Solvay and Hannibal saw Alec Boone win twice for the Lakers, covering the mile in 4;55.3 and also taking the 400 sprint in 53.6 seconds. Boone also paired with Harper, McKillop and Sean McPherson to take the 4×100 in 46.4 seconds.
Spangler had a strong showing in the discus, winning it by unleashing a throw of 106’5”. Satchwell cleared 5’6” for first place in the high jump.
Chittenango, who had hosted its own successful invitational meet on April 29, resumed OHSL Freedom division action last Tuesday, splitting a meet as it handled Fowler 103-37, but lost to the Central Square Redhawks 84-57.
Akira Gatewood still flourished for the Bears, going 11.5 seconds to edge Fowler’s Antonio Saba (11.6 seconds) in the 100 sprint and also winning the 200 in 23.4 seconds to Saba’s 23.6. Then, in the triple jump, Gatewood went 39 feet to hold off Central Square’s Noah Steele (38’9”) for another title.
Dylan Davie added two wins, going 19’9” in the long jump and, in the 400 hurdles, prevailing in 1:01.6 over the Redhawks’ Jameson Asmus (1:02.8). Meanwhile, Tyler Howard rolled to first place in the 110 high hurdles in 16.3 seconds as Nick Stanton edged Central Square’s Will Gordon, 53.0 seconds to 53.1, in the 400 sprint.
Elsewhere, Jacob Blaszkow was second in the mile in 5:05.67, and went 10:58.1 in the 3,200-meter run for another runner-up spot. Diego Prado threw the discus 90’4”but was second as the Redhawks’ Justin Allison threw it 120’2”.
The girls meet split in the same manner, Chittenango beating Fowler 103-27, but falling to Central Square 96.5-44.5.
Later that week, at the Rome Free Academy Girls Invitational, the Bears’ Kaitlyn Swain won the 400 sprint in 59.98 seconds, the only time under the one-minute mark, as McKenzie Dombroski finished fifth in the 800 in 2:32.07. Chittenango got sixth in the 4×400 relay (4:23.11) and Krissy Roberts had a sixth-place long jump of 15’9 ½”.
In Friday’s New Hartford Boys Invitational, the Bears’ best finish was in the distance medley relay, where Stanton, Mike Capeling, Phillip Abell and Jacob Blaszkow got fourth place in 11:21.76 after Chittenango took seventh place in the 4×400 and ninth place in the 4×800.
Stanton, on his own, was fifth in the 400 sprint in 52.82 seconds, while Howard got sixth place in the 110 hurdles in 16.51 seconds after going 15.76 seconds in the qualifying round. Davie got to sixth place in the 400 hurdles in 1:02.76. Gatewood just missed the points in the long jump, getting seventh place with 19 feet.
