Since their combined enrollments added up to large-school territory, the CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt wrestling team found itself joining Fayetteville-Manlius as they both went to Liverpool High School for last Saturday’s Section III Class AA championship meet.
And CBA/J-D did quite well, going 4-0 in finals and rising all the way to second place with 182 points to beat out the hosts and defending champions from Liverpool (176 points), though both trailed Baldwinsville, who won with 260 points. F-M, with 63.5 points, finished eighth.
Matt Griffin, at 99 pounds, rolled to the title thanks to a pair of first-period pins. Griffin took just 1:26 to beat Patrick Ivery (West Genesee) and then, in the championship round, finished off F-M’s Braden Florczyk in 50 seconds. Florczyk pinned Liverpool’s Corey Okun in 36 seconds in his semifinal bout.
To win at 113 pounds, Garrett Bauer got a pin over Central Square’s Terry Belden at the end of the first period to reach the finals against B’ville’s Zach Hahn, where Griffin nearly got a technical fall and rolled to a 13-1 victory.
The final for Jake Wright at 160 pounds was a lot more difficult. Having pinned C-NS’s Josh Bigford in the semifinal in 73 seconds, Wright needed all of his energy to turn back a strong challenge from West Genesee’s Liam Kotas in the final, winning a 12-8 decision.
And Ramy Guindy claimed the 285-pound championship in the closest way possible. Guindy survived a 3-2 semifinal with C-NS’s Christian Anoceto and, in the final, relied on a single escape to get a 1-0 decision over Rome Free Academy’s Spencer Pisaneschi.
Though no other CBA/J-D wrestler got to the finals, Jonah Cavallo 126 pounds) and Adam Honis (160 pounds) recorded third-place finishes. Cavallo pinned his teammate, Dustin Harris, early in the second period of their consolation bracket final as Honis got a 5-0 shutout over C-NS’s Josh Bigford to get to third place.
Besides Harris, three others – Ethan Wells (106 pounds), Shane Smith (120 pounds) and Ethan Palmer (195 pounds) – had fourth-place finishes. Abdullah Khatib, at 126, beat Ryan Blowers (Liverpool) for fifth place, with Lucas Granan (145 pounds) topping Central Square’s Nick Ackley 9-1 to also gain fifth place.
F-M had no other wrestler other than Florczyk reach the finals, but Bryce Doane, at 152 pounds, edged B’ville’s Spencer Woods 2-0 for a third-place finish. Ali Salem was fourth at 132, with Mukhtar Quibasy topping Naujalic Walker (Syracuse ITC) 12-3 for fifth place at 182 and Andrew Testani (285) beating Liverpool’s Brady Depan 3-1 to match Quibasy’s fifth-place effort. Charlie Josephson was sixth at 195.
East Syracuse Minoa would go to New Hartford for the sectional Class A tournament and do quite well, making it all the way to third place with 135.5 points. Only Fulton, with 319.5 points, and Indian River, with 177.5 points, fared better in the nine-team field.
In all, 12 Spartans had top-six finishes, even though none of them reached the championship round, including Jeff Loder, who at 152 lost his semifinal to Fulton’s Jacob Bailey 4-1, but recovered to win the consolation bracket, shutting out Josh Geissel (Auburn) 3-0 for third place.
Donovan Marriott took third place at 106, pinning Billy Winn (New Hartford) in the second period of the consolation bracket final. At 132, Dante O’Brien’s pin of Indian River’s Carlo Boltz led to another third-place finish. Alex Regan got third place at 160 when Fulton’s Andrew Yablonski took an injury default.
They had a unique situation at 195, where Joe Monteleone and Chris Todd each lost in the semifinals, but then won in the consolation bracket to set up a third-place match against each other. Monteleone got the best of it, rolling past Todd 13-5.
Garren Kuney was fourth at 138, while Medo Pugonja took fourth place at 170 and Ameer Ladd was fourth at 220. Eric Randazzo managed fifth place at 145 as Darian Crossman, at 182, got a 20-5 technical fall over Carthage’s George Lewis to finish fifth in that weight class. Mason Hausler was sixth at 220 behind Ladd.
ESM, F-M and CBA/J-D would send their top wrestlers to SRC Arena this Saturday for the overall sectional Division I (Large School) meet, which starts at 10 a.m. Only the winners are guaranteed spots in the Feb. 26-27 state championships at Albany’s Times Union Center.
