Feeling quite a bit of frustration of all the near-misses it has faced this winter, the CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt ice hockey team wanted to turn that anger into some victories on the ice before it got too late.
The Brothers hosted Whitesboro last Wednesday at Onondaga Nation Arena, and for a while it looked like more frustration was at hand, but CBA/J-D’s attack flared up late in the second period, and from there it went on to shut out the Warriors 4-0.
Deep into the second period, it remained 0-0, the Brothers unable to get anything past Whitesboro goaltender Jacob Domogal, who was on his way to a 33-save night. All of that changed, though, when Jack Austin, fed by Ryan McGuire and Adam Fontana, put in the game’s first goal with 2:30 left in the frame.
Taking that slim one-goal edge to the third period, CBA/J-D killed off a Warriors power play, and then made it 2-0 on Austin’s second goal, again assisted by McGuire, plus Lynch Raby. Liam O’Malley tacked on an unassisted goal with 5:01 left, and Raby converted with 2:45 to play as McGuire got his third assist of the night and Jamie St. Amour assisted, too.
This was by no means a one-sided affair, in terms of chances. All game long, Whitesboro applied pressure, but Brothers goalie Peyton Bowler turned everything away, finishing with 30 saves to get the shutout.
Still at home Friday night, CBA/J-D welcomed Clinton to Nedrow, and this game turned into a physical, low-scoring battle, but for once a close game went in the Brothers’ favor as it held on for a 2-1 victory over the Warriors and climbed above the .500 mark, too, improving to 7-6-1.
McGuire continued to produce big plays for CBA/J-D, notching a breakaway goal in the first period. And that was the lone tally for either team in the first two periods, despite all kinds of pressure applied by both sides.
Clinton felt particular frustration because it unleashed several different barrages that netted nothing, a direct result of Bowler’ s work between the pipes as he stopped 42 of the 43 shots he faced.
Meanwhile, CBA/J-D was patient against Warriors goalie Brian Saunders, who was amassing 26 saves. Not until St. Amour found the net in the third period did the Brothers get the goal that, as it turned out, it needed since Clinton’s Matt Martini also scored in the final frame. Fontana, Ben McCreary and Connor Flanagan each got one assist.
In its only action last week, Fayetteville-Manlius had to go to Shove Park last Wednesday and take on state Division I no. 2-ranked West Genesee, where it stayed within range for a long while, but still lost to the Wildcats in another 4-0 decision.
Catching WG right after its big win over then-unbeaten Syracuse on Jan. 14, the Hornets hoped the Wildcats would have some sort of a letdown. Instead, Ryan McDonald scored five minutes into the first period, and Jay Considine added a goal later in that frame to make it 2-0.
To its credit, F-M kept the Wildcats off the board in the second period, James Kaffenberger turning everything away as he eventually recorded 33 saves on the night. But WG made it 3-0 just 38 seconds into the third period thanks to McDonald’s second goal, assisted by Steve Anderson, and Dan Colabufo converted three minutes later.
On the other end, the Hornets ran headlong into a tough Wildcats defense that held them to 10 shots, all stopped by Sammy Colabufo. F-M fell to 3-11-1 on the season and faces Rome Free Academy this Friday at Kennedy Arena.
CBA/J-D, for its part, is off until Friday, when it gets a big test against New Hartford, the first of two big back-to-back home games that includes the Feb. 2 visit from reigning state Division II champion Skaneateles.
