Onondaga — Through two Central New York Indoor Track Association meets this winter, Cicero-North Syracuse remains undefeated.
In the morning session of Wednesday’s Oscar B. Jensen Holiday Relays at SRC Arena, the boys and girls Northstars both prevailed, with Liverpool second in the boys event and third in the girls event.
Each of the events featured two athletes and combined times, scores and distances, so there were no four-person relay races.
And it proved quite close in the girls event. C-NS had 76 points, just one more than runner-up Jamesville-DeWitt (75 points) as Liverpool picked up 56 points to finish third.
In the 600-meter run, C-NS won as Annina Marullo and Jamie Wagner combined to go 3:36.64, beating out J-D (3:38.91), a two-point difference. Liverpool was fourth in 3:50.84.
Emily Dembowski and Megan Trubia teamed to take the 3,000-meter run in 23:31.69, while Marie Leroy and Lauren Witek finished second (1:33.24) to Corcoran (1:32.74) in the 300-meter dash, where the Warriors settled for sixth place.
Jilliann Norris and Haley Pestle were third in the 1,000-meter run in 6:51.20, holding off Liverpool’s Jillian Stagnitta and Mallory Woytowicz (6:53.83) in fourth place. Norris and Abby Szumloz were third (2:55.41), ahead of Liverpool (3:01.05), in the 500-meter run.
Moving to field events, Shayla Webb, second in the triple jump by going 32 feet 2 1/2 inches, joined Krystyna Baltrusitis to get second place with a combined 61’7 1/2″ behind Central Square’s 63’1 1/2″. Kierrah Butler and Destiny Monica were second in the shot put with combined throws of 62’8 3/4″, just behind Solvay’s 62’10 3/4″, with Liverpool sixth.
Liverpool saw Juliana Basla win the individual girls mile in 5:15.79 as she and third-place Vanessa Eberhard helped the Warriors post a winning 10:57.37, with C-NS (12:15.20) in fourth place.
Right after, Morgan Chewning-Kulick claimed the individual 800-meter run in 2:35.97, edging out Dembowski (2:36.30), and the Warriors’ Kristina Moore was third, helping the Warriors win the team race in 5:17.86, ahead of Dembkowski and Headan Wilson (5:20.76) in second place.
continued — Alexis Bittel and Amelia Johnson were third in the 55-meter hurdles in 20.02 seconds, with Baltrusitis and Brittany House fourth in 20.38 seconds. The Warriors also took sixth in the 55-meter dash, 16.31 seconds to C-NS’s 16.55 seconds in seventh place.
Kelley Townley and Mackenzie Case won the pole vault for Liverpool with combined clearances of 17’6″ to hold off Central Square (17 feet). Megan Milazzo earned seven points in the high jump, clearing 5 feet as C-NS’s Cassie Baldwin (4’8″) was fourth.
Contrasting the girls scores, the boys event was a breeze for C-NS, who had 90 points, nearly twice the total of Liverpool, who edged out Central Square, 46.5 points to 44.5, to finish second.
In the 1,000, Andrew Bearkland and Nate Poirier combined to 5:34.66 to overcome Liverpool’s Ben Petrella taking the individual race in 2:38.34 as Petrella and Gaganjot Sekhon were second on the team side in 5:37.30.
Later, Joe Tricarico and Sam Barber won the 3,200-meter run in 20:44.45, with the Warriors’ Ryan Comstock and Cullen McLaughlin third in 21:04.90. And in the 300, Zach Kennedy and Matt Kilian went 1:17.23 between them and won that event over Marcellus (1:18.77) and the field.
C-NS’s Tyler Mosher threw the shot put 44’4 1/4″ to top all individuals and paired with Elijah Weiss for an individual title by going 81’10 1/4.
Jeremiah Willis won the individual 55 sprint in 6.75 seconds for C-NS, edging out Henninger’s Deven Redden (6.76 seconds) as Willis and Tyler Days were second in 13.72 seconds, just 0.01 seconds behind the Black Knights’ 13.71 seconds.
Ed Mahana, who won the individual 55 hurdles in exactly eight seconds, joined Ryan Williams for a third-place team finish in 18.98 seconds. Mahana also won the 600-meter run in 1:31.03, but only got fourth-place points with Allen Garnes as they posted 3:08.10.
continued — George Reader, who cleared 5’10” in the high jump for a second-place indvidual finish. got second place on the team side with Kennedy by topping 11’6″ to Oswego’s 11’10”. Liverpool tied for sixth. Ward Couillard, clearing 9 feet, earned fifth-place points in the pole vault.
Moving to the 500, Liverpool’s Terrell Coleman claimed it in 1:10.11 over C-NS’s Matt Williams (1:11.58), with Petrella joining Coleman for a Warriors victory in 2:22.91 as Matt and Ryan Williams were second in 2:27.64.
For Liverpool, Ty Brownlow won the individual mile in 4:38.74, taking team honors with Julio Roman in 9:37.97 ahead of C-NS’s Zach Wagner and Nate Poirier, who were second in 9:48.82. Then Steve Schulz and Collin Gwilt won the 1,000 in 4:18.18, with David Ware and Noah Poirer getting C-NS to third in 4:28.51.
