An early-season girls basketball match between Solvay and Jordan-Elbridge took place last Wednesday night, and the Eagles proved quite impressive, placing four different players in double figures and pulling away to drop the Bearcats 67-40.
J-E actually trailed, 10-9, through one period, but then took over, gaining the lead by halftime and more than doubling Solvay’s production during a 41-19 second-half surge where most of the starting lineup proved tough to stop.
Emily Somes led with 17 points, but Emily Klock was close behind, gaining 16 points. Alexis Braun joined in with 15 points and Allison Jennings stepped up with 13 points, all of which helped to overcome a career night by the Bearcats’ Aleah Yiazzo, who had 28 points, but not as much help. Elle Hodge earned nine points and Nadea Davis earned nine rebounds, with Johnae Crenshaw adding six rebounds.
From there, J-E went on to handle Union Springs 54-34 in a non-league game 24 hours later. Klock, with 14 points, was one of three Eagles to score in double figures, with Somes earning 12 points and Bailey Van Gorden adding 10 points. Braun, with eight points, was right behind.
Back on Monday, Solvay hosted Phoenix, keeping the game within range for three quarters before the Firebirds pulled away late and prevailed 69-45.
During a high-scoring final period, Solvay got 18 points, but Phoenix netted 29, which turned a 40-27 game into something more lopsided, overcoming a great night from Nadea Davis, who had 12 points, 13 rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks.
Hodge finished with nine points and six rebounds, with Crenshaw also getting six boards to go with her seven points. Yaizzo matched Crenshaw’s output of seven points as Tyler Marcott piled up 11 rebounds and Sam Farruggio gained six rebounds of her own.
In Friday’s 63-35 defeat to Chittenango, Solvay saw the Bears accumulate a 49-21 lead through three periods. Davis still had 14 points and nine rebounds, while Yaizzo gained 10 points. Hodge added six points and Taylor Marcott produced six rebounds.
After a 2-0 start, Marcellus found it rougher once it got into the heart of its tough OHSL Liberty division schedule. The Mustangs hosted neighbor and rival Skaneateles last Tuesday night, and though it played well for long stretches, struggles late in the first half would prove costly in a 50-43 defeat to the Lakers.
Throughout the first quarter, an effective Marcellus defense forced turnovers and created chances on the other end and a 14-6 lead. The Mustangs were still in front when, right before halftime, Skaneateles surged, eventually going in front, 28-24 as freshman Olivia Dobrovosky burned the Mustangs with 17 first-half points.
From there, the game turned into a tight defensive battle, Marcellus containing Dobrovosky, who managed just one free throw after the break, but getting hurt by Shannon Foehl, who worked inside and finished the night with 17 points.
No one on the Mustangs’ roster could match the production of Dobrovosky and Foehl, though Eve Hughes led with 11 points and six rebounds. Shannon White added 10 points and three rebounds, while Kassidy Smithler got seven points and Sydney Lewis had six points, each of them contributing four rebounds. Liz White had five steals, but was held without a field goal.
