After one season among the Section III Class A sides and going 11-8, the Marcellus girls basketball team finds itself back in Class B, knowing that plenty of challenges from the likes of defending sectional champion Westhill awaits them.
At least things started well for the Mustangs, who hosted East Syracuse Minoa Tuesday night and controlled matters from start to finish in a 46-30 victory over the Spartans.
Much of that winning margin was built during a first half where Marcellus steadily built a 29-11 edge, converting on one end and containing ESM on the other side. Though the Spartans cut into that deficit in the third quarter, the Mustangs were never in any real danger.
Liz White earned 14 points, adding five steals and sinking three 3-pointers to account for much of her production. Eve Hughes had 10 points and five rebounds, while Shannon White, the team’s lone senior, had seven points. Julia Piotkowski and Lewis Sydney each produced six points and five rebounds.
Jordan-Elbridge also opened with a victory, venturing to Onondaga and rarely letting the Tigers do too much as it won by a score of 40-19.
OCS managed just two points in the first quarter, and though J-E didn’t light it up too much, it still did enough to establish a 23-10 halftime margin. A 12-5 push through the third quarter closed it out as Emily Somes earned 13 points, with Alexis Braun adding 10 points. Emily Klock and Katie Goodrich had seven points apiece.
A day earlier, Solvay got underway against Homer, and its offense would struggle for long stretches of time in a 48-20 defeat to the Trojans. Already trailing 16-5 through one period, the Bearcats saw things get worse when it did not net a single point in the second quarter.
Homer, led by Caley Cornwell (15 points) and Madison Dimorier (10 points), kept pulling away, with Solvay not even getting into double figures on the scoreboard until the fourth quarter, with the game well out of reach.
Aleah Yaizzo still had seven points and six rebounds, with Nadea Davis adding five assists, five rebounds and three steals. Camille Devereaux had four rebounds and two steals, with Elle Hodge adding three rebounds and three steals.
