Cazenovia — December is a popular month for fun at the Cazenovia Public Library. Art for Kids and Lego My Library are both scheduled in December, as well as the hit movie “Minions.”
Art for Kids—Louis Comfort Tiffany: The Story of an Artist
Children ages 8 to 14 are invited to join Pat Hill and Jenna Wright-Martin for “Louis Comfort Tiffany: The Story of an Artist,” the second installment of this season’s popular “Art for Kids” series, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, in the library community room.
Best known for his leaded-glass lampshades, artist Louis Comfort Tiffany (1898-1933) was a master of many mediums including painting, interior design, stained glass, metalwork, pottery, mosaics and jewelry. A fascination with the properties and potential of glass, as well as a background in chemistry, inspired Tiffany to explore new and unconventional methods of glassmaking. The Tiffany Glass Company was incorporated Dec. 1, 1885, and in 1902 it became known as the Tiffany Studios.
Tiffany’s innovation led to the creation of Opalescent Glass or American glass. Vastly different from the traditional glass of the time, opalescent glass was wonderfully diverse in both color and texture. Tiffany’s revolutionary approach allowed artists to “paint with glass instead of on glass,” giving pieces a three-dimensional look.
In this special holiday version of “Art for Kids,” a selection of items created at the Tiffany glass studios will be examined, and participants will then design a Tiffany-style ornament to decorate their own homes for the holiday season.
As in past years, “Art for Kids” participants will qualify for a chance to win a beautiful art collection, consisting of 178 pieces and including just about everything an artist would need — color markers, crayons, color pencils, watercolor cakes, oil pastels, acrylic paint tubes and more — all arranged in a beautiful wooden case with adjustable trays.
continued — To ensure program quality, class size is limited. Stop by or call the library at 655- 9322 to reserve a spot, and keep your eyes open for details on future “Art for Kids” programming that are scheduled on Cazenovia Central School District half-days.
Lego My Library
Using the Library’s collection of LEGO and Duplo blocks, children ages 3 and older and their families will have the opportunity to build and create something spectacular at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14, in the library community room.
The library is a place for discovery and imagination, and this building program fits that mission. Building offers children the experience of making their imaginative musings come to life. By introducing them to these hands-on experiences with science and math, children not only learn how to build different structures but how to also make them stronger and taller.
“Minions” movie
At 3:15 and 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18, come to the library community room to watch the hit movie “Minions.” From T. Rex to Napoleon, the easily distracted tribe of Minions has lived to serve the most despicable of masters. Now, protective leader Kevin, teenage rebel Stuart, and lovable little Bob are on a global road trip where they’ll earn a shot at working for a new boss — the world’s first female super-villain — and try to save all of Minionkind from annihilation.
“Minions” is rated PG and runs for 91 minutes. As always, the popcorn is free.
All events at the Cazenovia Public Library are free and open to the public. For more information on these programs for children or other events at the Library, call 655-9322 or visit cazenoviapubliclibrary.org.
