VILLAGE OF BALDWINSVILLE – In June of 2011, Rick and Lorie Schneider of Lysander received the news no parent of a military son or daughter ever wants to receive, that their son, Marine Corporal Kyle Schneider had been killed in action.
Rick and Lorie know only too well the horror, grief, shock and sorrow that accompanies the awful news that comes when two Marines show up in the driveway.
They credit the immense outpouring of love and support from family, friends and their church for helping them through that tragedy and every day since.
Through that heartbreak of darkness, came a beaming light of good, when Rick and Lorie decided to set up a foundation to help other military families through the foundation named in their son’s honor, “The Cpl. Kyle Schneider Foundation.”
This year, the foundation is hosting its annual Honor & Remember Hybrid Run/Walk 5K on Saturday, May 20, Armed Forces Day. The Honor & Remember Run/Walk brings communities together to honor those that have served and remember those that have sacrificed.
All proceeds support The Cpl. Kyle R. Schneider Foundation, a local CNY Not-For-Profit foundation, formed in honor of fallen United States Marine, Cpl. Kyle R. Schneider.
Schneider dedicated his life to serving his nation and his local community. The foundation was formed to carry on Schneider’s legacy of leadership and service, with a focus on families of fallen members of the armed forces and returned heroes.
The Corporal Kyle R. Schneider foundation renders support to assist active duty, reserve and retired United States Armed Forces members, their families and injured and recovering heroes.
This year there are two ways to participate. First, people can join us in person, Armed Forces Day, Saturday May 20 at scenic Van Buren Park, 2607 Connors Road, just off route 690 West, at the Van Buren Road exit.
The race includes the challenging hill veterans have nicknamed “Schneider Hill.”
The venue is a favorite training facility of area high school cross country teams. The event starts with an opening ceremony at 7:45 a.m., followed by the walk/run at 8 a.m.
Additionally, people can join us “virtually” from their favorite run/walk location. The Virtual event can be completed from any location throughout the United States.
