To the editor:
We were disappointed and saddened by the announcement that Centro will not be providing bus service to the new Community Library of DeWitt and Jamesville on Jamesville Road. This lack of public service will adversely affect the most vulnerable and create another barrier to those who need it the most — children in poverty, people searching for work, struggling students and the senior population.
The library is a critical component to a thriving community, as it not only provides access to books and videos, but also internet service for those looking for jobs, applying to college or seeking information about government services. It is a community center for many demographics such as the elderly.
This lack of public service will work against the very goals we in DeWitt have been working toward — a town that is accessible for all people and that will allow our aging population to age in place. Many of our residents need access to services like the library but cannot drive.
We call upon Centro to reconsider this highly consequential policy. Surely, reworking a three-minute or more detour into the Centro schedule is worth the enormous positive impact that it will have on many people of our community.
