Question: There are houses. And, there are houses. This house has had three different roles since it was built in 1866. Do you know this home’s story? Can you identify its location?
Last week’s answer: The 1912 photo from last week shows the Four Corners facing south on Oswego Street with Bridge Street in the background. The southeast corner still has the Upson block that was mentioned in the previous History Mystery. A trolley crossing the bridge is in the back of the photo.

The southwest corner shows the current building that is still there today.
Working up Oswego Street on the west side is the third Seneca Hotel which existed from 1889 to 1935. Up from that is the building that is under the south end of Seneca Savings Bank (formerly First National and later Seneca Federal).
On the east side of the street looking from the left is the building that housed the State Bank and in later years Berndt-Michels Dry Cleaners; currently, it is Dani’s Dessert and Wine Bar, which is closing at the end of March.
The next building was the Connell Store run by L.W. and J.E. Connell from 1870 to 1935 when Sheldon Titcomb bought them out. These mercantile businesses were very popular. Mr. Titcomb remodeled it more than once. The last time it was lowered to the one floor it is today.
The very impressive large structure next was the Howard Opera House. It was erected in 1881 by Hiram Howard on the site of Herrick’s Hall. It was a very popular entertainment venue until it burned down in 1914. It was replaced by the Grange Hall — currently the site of Pizza Man.
The last building on the corner of East Genesee and Oswego streets shows the Upson-Nettleton building.
Also note the dirt roads, wooden sidewalks, and horse and carriages. Baldwinsville was a busy place even back then.
Email your guess to [email protected] or leave a message at 315-434-8889 ext. 332 with your guess by noon Friday. If you are the first person to correctly identify an element in the photo before the deadline, your name and guess will appear in next week’s newspaper, along with another History Mystery feature. History Mystery is a joint project of the Museum at the Shacksboro Schoolhouse and the Baldwinsville Public Library.
