The Onondaga County Board of Elections has yet to certify the results for the Sept. 12 Conservative primary for the Van Buren highway superintendent race.
Republican challenger Todd McIntyre received 35 votes, and 35 write-in votes were cast as well. The incumbent highway superintendent is Doug Foster, a Republican.
“There’s a slight wrinkle there,” said Dustin Czarny, Democratic election commissioner. “All that we know right now is that the write-ins equal the number of votes cast.”
Czarny said the Board of Elections is in the process of manually counting write-in votes, and absentee ballots will be opened Tuesday, Sept. 19.
“If it results in a tie the Conservative party will select a candidate,” Czarny said.
While Czarny said primary ties are unusual, Onondaga County saw two tied races this week. In addition to the Van Buren highway superintendent Conservative primary, two Republican candidates for the Clay Town Board tied for third place in the Independence Party primary.
