Manlius — Some local ice cream lovers had a bit of a scare during the week of Jan. 10 when a sign went up on the fencing surrounding the CVS construction on Fayette Street in the village of Manlius that said, “Coming Soon: The Cone King.” Many residents became concerned that there would soon be some competition for Sno Top, as the sign went up right across from the ice cream parlor that has been in the village for more than 50 years.
After some research into the matter by Eagle Bulletin staff, it has been determined that there is no reason to be distressed. After reaching out to Manlius Mayor Paul Whorrall on Jan. 15, he said he was not aware of any plans for an ice cream shop to be put at that location. Whorrall later confirmed that the sign was put up as a prank to the owners of Sno Top, Vince and Kathy Giordano, set up by their friends.
The prank sign has since been taken down.
On Jan. 25, Sno Top confirmed that the sign was just a prank, and stated on Facebook, “No worries friends of Sno Top … There isn’t an ice cream parlor that is going up across the street from us. You may have seen a sign stating this. Someone had a little fun and played a joke. We received many, many calls. Thank you for your concerns!”
