Diaper Drive for the Great Give Back | Monday, October 16th – Tuesday, October 31st: The library will be collecting diaper donations for the Skaneateles Storks Diaper Bank run by the Skaneateles United Methodist Church. Open diaper packages accepted as long as they are labeled with size.
The mission of The Great Give Back is to provide a day of opportunities for the patrons of the Public Libraries of New York State to participate in meaningful, service-oriented experiences.
Solve the Mystery:Nancy Drew’s Mystery at Magnolia Gardens |Wednesday, October 4th from 6:00 – 7:30 PM: Be part of the mystery solving team as we review evidence, eliminate suspects, and catch the culprit in the poisoning of Nancy Drew: The Mystery at Magnolia Gardens. This highly collaborative, problem-solving game based on the Nancy Drew series should take between 60 – 90 minutes to solve. Registration required. For adults.
Sensory Exploration | Monday, October 9th from 10:30 – 11:30 AM: Drop-in for a variety of sensory boxes that encourages children to explore and learn through hands-on tactile play. This program helps to develop fine motor skills, engage the senses, and introduce new words, concepts, and tactile sensations. For ages 2 – 5.
Nailed It!: Halloween | Monday, October 9th from 1:00 – 2:00 PM: Inspired by the show, Nailed It!, kids will compete to recreate a spooky cupcake decoration and then eat their hard work at the end of the program. Registration required. For ages 8 – 12.
Library Board Meeting | Tuesday, October 10th at 6:30 PM | The Library Board is made up of community members who volunteer their time and skills to further the mission of the library. All meetings are open and the public is welcome to attend.
Cookbook Club: Octoberfest | Wednesday, October 11th at 6:00 PM | This month’s theme is Octoberfest! Bring a prepared dish to share and the cookbook/recipe that inspired the dish. Everyone will have a chance to sample dishes from an assortment of cookbooks while only having to prepare one dish. Make sure you come hungry! Registration is requested so that we know how many places to set at the table!
Science of Reading: Session Three: The Brain as a Pattern Detector | Saturday, October 14th at 1:00 PM | Did you know over 90% of the English language is decodable? Learn why the belief that English has “too many exceptions” is actually unfounded. This session is sure to up your Wordle game!
Participants are encouraged but not required to attend all six of the sessions and have the option to join either virtually via Zoom or in-person at the library. Registration requested.
Morning Book Club: Book of Lost Names | Monday, October 16th at 10:30 AM | This month we’re reading Book of Lost Names by Kristin Harmel. Inspired by a true story from World War II, the novel tells the story of a young woman with a talent for forgery who helps hundreds of Jewish children flee the Nazis.
Meetings are casual and everyone is welcome. The Morning Book Club meets the third Monday of the month. Participants have the option to join the discussion either in-person at the library or virtually via Zoom.
Guitar Concert: Emma Rush | Friday, October 20th at 7:30 PM | Over the past decade, Emma Rush has established herself as one of Canada’s preeminent classical guitarists. Known for her innovative programming and powerful stage presence, along with her warm sound and virtuosic technique, her concerts are always one to remember.
Rush is an award-winning artist and was a prizewinner at the Columbus International Guitar Competition and the Great Lakes Guitar Competition.
She completed her graduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold, Germany (2006), following an honours Bachelor of Music degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS (2002).
Trick-or-Treat Story Time | Wednesday, October 25th from 10:30 – 11:30 AM: Dress in your costume and join us for a Halloween-themed story time. At 11:00 AM, kids and caregivers can trick-or-treat around the library. For ages 2 – 5.
Evening Book Club: Anthropocene Reviewed | Wednesday, October 25th at 6:30 PM | This month we’re reading Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green, a collection of personal essays about shared experiences of the different facets of the human-centered planet—from the QWERTY keyboard and Staphylococcus aureus to the Taco Bell breakfast menu.
The Evening Book Club meets the last Wednesday of the month. Meetings are casual and everyone is welcome. Participants have the option to join the discussion either in-person at the library or virtually via Zoom.

Science of Reading: Session Four: The Brain as a Pattern Detector II | Saturday, October 28th at 1:00 PM | Practice the six syllable types by reading new and nonsense words and learn about the “Heart Word” strategy for the few spelling exceptions. Once you know the six syllable types and understand what makes a word “decodable,” you will never look at words the same way!
Participants are encouraged but not required to attend all six of the sessions and have the option to join either virtually via Zoom or in-person at the library. Registration requested.
