The Nottingham Residential Health Care Facility (RHCF), located in Jamesville, has been named a 2019-
2020 Best Nursing Home by media company U.S. News & World Report.
The Nottingham RHCF earned the designation by achieving “High Performing” ratings for its services,
standing among the top 19% of skilled nursing facilities in the United States.
“Our focus on the resident and doing the right thing for the resident is showing,” RHCF Administrator
Maureen Cerniglia said. “Every single staff member works really hard every single day, and this is definitely the
result of that hard work.”
Cerniglia said the size of the 40-resident skilled nursing facility helps the staff members respond more
quickly to issues and develop “close relationships” with these residents and their families.
U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 15,000 nursing homes nationwide, going through every
state and nearly 100 major metropolitan areas.
“For the aging population in America, a nursing home should meet the specific level of care based
on the needs of each patient or resident,” said Kim Castro, editor and chief content officer of U.S. News &
World Report. “The U.S. News Best Nursing Home ratings hone in on measurements like emergency room
visits, quality of staff and proper distribution of medical and physical therapy to help families make an informed
decision. These ratings help individuals and their families begin their search for senior care and should be used
in consultation with a medical professional and in-depth on-site visits.”
Although the Best Nursing Home ratings rely on data published by CMS (the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services), they are completely separate from CMS’s star ratings.
The Nottingham RHCF staffs registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and certified nurse aides. The facility has nursing care available 24 hours a day and seven days a week year-round.
“We provide a service that is so needed,” Cerniglia said. “We’re seeing an influx of older adults coming in
with either physical or dementia-related ailments that need this level of care.”
Cerniglia said the constant supervision is useful for those who might fear the possibility of falling down while
walking.
She said immediate response might not otherwise be offered to someone who has to navigate living on their
own.
Cerniglia also said that the Nottingham’s nursing home environment allows senior citizens opportunities to
socialize and engage in activities through such means as cooking programs intended to stimulate the senses,
gatherings to watch films, group hand manicures, singing, interactions with school-age visitors and
conversations spent reminiscing.
The Nottingham RHCF is one of three nursing homes grouped under the umbrella of healthcare provider
Loretto alongside The Commons on St. Anthony in Auburn and Loretto Health & Rehabilitation on Brighton
Avenue in Syracuse.
“The Nottingham has always been a popular choice in Central New York and is an important part
of the continuum of care across Loretto’s entire breadth of locations and services,” said Dr. Kimberly
Townsend, president and CEO of Loretto.
The Nottingham is located at 1301 Nottingham Road in Jamesville.
