On consecutive nights early last week, both of Baldwinsville’s volleyball teams had important tests to see whether they still stood out at the top of their respective CNY Counties League standings. Going first, the girls Bees hosted West Genesee last Monday night, exactly two weeks after going to Camillus and getting a scare from the Wildcats in a four-set defeat. The rematch wasn’t as close, B’ville rolling to a 25-16, 25-9, 25-10 sweep. All of that hard work done during the Sept. 26 Fall Swing Classic had steeled B’ville, who controlled all phases of the game against WG, starting with the serves, where Kiannah Titus dialed up seven of her team’s 11 aces. On the back line, Maddie Stone, with 15 assists, and Hannah Klaben, with 14 assists, split the duties, with Klaben adding three kills and three digs. Their passes went to Michelle Voyer, who earned 13 kills and four blocks, along with Abby May and Riley Carlucci, who had six kills apiece. Morgan Shibel earned four kills and Emily Pascale finished with six blocks. Still at home Wednesday night, B’ville took on Cicero-North Syracuse and pulled off another impressive sweep, taking the first set 25-15 and the second set 25-11 before closing it out, 25-17, in the third set. May took over on the front line, earning 13 kills to go with five digs, three aces and two blocks. Voyer added five kills, with Titus and Shibel earning three kills apiece. Klaben earned 15 assists, matching both May and Pascale with five digs as Stone chimed in with seven assists and three digs. In another key CNYCL match Friday night, B’ville visited Fayetteville-Manlius, and it resulted in another sweep, the Bees only getting pushed a bit in the first set, but winning it 25-20 and then ripping the Hornets 25-12 in each of the next two sets. Klaben and Stone both posted 11 assists, Klaben adding three kills, two blocks and five digs. Pascale contributed 13 digs as, in front of her, May had eight kills, two blocks and five digs, with Voyer adding seven kills and three blocks. Shibel produced seven blocks and four kills. Riley Carlucci added five blocks and three kills. Meanwhile, the Baldwinsville boys volleyball team visited unbeaten C-NS in their first head-to-head match since last November’s Section III final, and even though the Northstars were short-handed, it still managed to sweep the Bees in three sets. Just before the match, Justin Kegebein, one of C-NS’s top front-line players, sprained his ankle. Yet his absence wasn’t felt as C-NS plugged in Warren Hoke to the rotation and led throughout a 25-15 first set. Then, in each of the next two sets, B’ville held early leads, but could not sustiain them, taking defeats by equal 25-21 margins. Dan Shorney led the Bees with five kills, 17 assists and four digs. Alex Brummer added four kills and two aces, with Liam Wicks and Nick Walker each getting three kills. David Cerqua added six cigs. Hoke finished with 10 kills as C-NS teammate Luke Barnell had 16 kills and Connor Millias earned 45 assists. Back home Thursday night, B’ville took the measure of the Oswego Buccaneers, who had lost to C-NS in five sets the week before. The Bees fared better, claiming the first set 25-18 and, after dropping the second set 25-22, pulling out a tight third set 25-23 and carrying that momentum over into a 25-16 fourth-set victory that ended it. Up front, Ryan Gell roared back to form, earning 16 kills, while Wicks picked up 10 kills. Walker earned six kills, just in front of Brummer and Cole Patrode, who had five kills apiece. Shorney fed all of them with 39 assists as Cerqua gainee 12 digs, plus a team-best four aces. Oswego got 18 kills from Kyle Kon, 13 kills from Trevor Bradshaw and 33 assists from Jason Proud. Matches against Central Square and Liverpool loom this week for the boys Bees as it has to wait until Oct. 22 for the C-NS rematch in the Baker High School gym. The girls Bees follow Tuesday’s match with Henninger with a weekend trip to Long Island for the big John Glenn Tournament.
