Look who is back on the sidelines for the Skaneateles girls volleyball team.
Doreen Doctor, the long-time mentor of the Lakers’ program, ended a brief retirement and returned to duty this fall, determined to bring Skaneateles back to championship form.
And it proved a winning start for the Lakers, who visited Hannibal in last Tuesday’s opener and won each of the first two sets by 25-19 margins before taking the third set 25-13 to complete the sweep of the Warriors.
Margaret Canty led the way, putting together 10 assists, five aces and three digs. Kelsey Kraetz paced the front line through her seven kills and seven blocks, adding four aces as Jessica Patalino got four kills.
Bella Falcone managed three kills, three blocks and two assists, with Emily Baldwin earning five kills. Mia Grasso (five digs) and Emma Goodell (four digs) offered defensive support.
Skaneateles then made it 2-0 on Thursday night, taking just three sets to put away Phoenix. Only the second set proved tight as the Lakers prevailed 25-15, 25-21, 25-11.
Kraetz served up 12 aces to set the tone, adding four blocks and three digs. Karah Blair added four aces to go with her 12 assists as she, Falcone (six assists) and Cassidy Pitman (four assists) handled back-line duties. Goodell got 15 digs as Bailey Herr amassed five kills, six digs and three aces in front of Patalino, who put together three kills.
Following a trip to Central Square on Tuesday, Skaneateles (2-0) gets a key early-season test next Thursday when it hosts Jamesville-DeWitt, who has roared out to a 3-0 start.
