When area track and field teams went to their respective Section III Class B championships, the girls didn’t have to go far, with Westhill serving as the hosts for Thursday’s competition.
Jordan-Elbridge did quite well in the Class B-2 meet, earning 98 points to top everyone in the eight-team field except Clinton, who won with 186.5 points.
Abby Gugel and Rebekah Blonski led the way for the Eagles. First, Gugel won the 1,500-meter run in 4:57.75 over Clinton’s Eva Borton (4:59.97) finished second. Then, in the 800-meter run, Gugel needed 2:25.97 to pull away from the field that included teammate Theresa Dristle, who finished third in 2:34.18 as Emma Burns (2:39.25) was sixth.
Blonski was victorious in the 100-meter dash, beating out Clinton’s Rylee Meelan, 13.38 seconds to 13.53, and with a long jump of 17 feet ¾ inch got away from Altmar-Parish-Williamstown’s Kylee Bartlett (16’4”) and the field. Also, Blonski needed 16.54 seconds to gain third place in the 100-meter hurdles, and was fifth (1:13.38) in the 400 hurdles, where Abigail Fallon finished seventh in 1:16.68.
Julie Hines was quite good, too, tying for second in the high jump by clearing 4’10”. She also took third place in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.05 and also got third in the 200 in 27.84 seconds.
Gugel, Dristle, Burns and Maggie DeJohn won the 4×800 relay in 10:05.38, beating out Lowville (10:10.77). Fallon, Rylie Parker, Brittany Hares and McKenzie Stevenson were second in the 4×100 in 54.38 seconds, while Burns, Dristle, Hares and Hines were fourth (4:33.21) in the 4×400.
Amelia Younis was sixth in the pentathlon, picking up 1,505 points as Natalyn Walts finished seventh. Mary Elizabeth Dristle was sixth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (8:56.67) and seventh in the 3,000-meter run.
In Class B-1, Westhill-Bishop Ludden finished third with 99 points behind Skaneateles (149.5 points) and Cazenovia (103.5 points), with Solvay getting sixth place with 37 points.
The Warriors won the 4×800, seeing Annibel Coolican, Alaina Kenny, Megan O’Reilly and Carmella Carr post a time of 10:01.84 that easily beat Skaneateles (10:09.88) and the field.
A 1-2 finish followed in the 2,000 steeplechase, with Carr getting the victory in 8:10.22, beating out Haylei Coolican, who was second in 8:13.57. Solvay’s Jordyn Willsey (8:16.93) was fifth.
Westhill-Ludden also swept the top two spots in the pole vault, where Katherine Doherty and Noelle Coolican both cleared 9 feet, but Doherty did so with fewer misses to prevail.
Annibel Coolican took third place in the 400 hurdles in 1:11.63, with O’Reilly getting fourth place (2:31.42) in the 800. Later, in the 4×400 relay, Coolican joined Olivia Daigneau, Mary Kate Washburn and Genevieve Schwarz to earn third place in 4:22.97.
In the 4×100, Doherty, Daigneau, Washburn and Isabella Haber were third in 52.53 seconds. Doherty also was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 17.46 seconds, with Genny Corcoran third in the 3,000 (10:48.30), ahead of Kenny (11:29.41) in fifth place. Corcoran also took fourth in the 1,500 in 4:55.09.
Solvay saw Samantha Waters throw the shot put 32’6” to win that event, with Washburn taking third place by heaving it 29’7 ½ before she finished third in the discus with a throw of 79’4”, beating out Waters (78’4”) in fifth place.
Belle Nieves rise to second place in the pentathlon, earning 2,146 points by winning the high jump and shot put portions, but finishing just behind South Jefferson’s Kealy DeForest, who prevailed with 2,246 points. Westhill-Ludden’s Katie De Veyra and Mackenzie Powers were fifth and sixth, respectively, with the Bearcats’ Danielle Leonardo in seventh place.
Elsewhere, Katie Harrington was busy, placing in four events. Harrington had a third-place triple jump of 32’9 ¼” and cleared 4’8” to get fourth place in the high jump. She also took fifth in the 800 in 2:31.85 and sixth in the 100 hurdles in 18.47 seconds.
