Every season, one week for the Baldwinsville track and field teams means a bit more than the others because of the annual John Arcaro Invitational at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
And when it did take place last Friday afternoon, the boys Bees had a strong showing, putting up 65 points to finish second in a 20-team field, trailing only Cicero-North Syracuse’s total of 116.33 points, while the girls Bees had 86 points to tie Skaneateles for second place behind Tully’s winning total of 94 points.
During the 800-meter run, Arden Kellner continued to stand out, finishing in one minutes, 58.58 seconds to hold off Central Square’s Sean Kuehn (1:59.03) for the top spot. Then, in the mile, Dan Conlan went 4:34.02 to beat Utica-Notre Dame’s Dan Hillman (4:37.47) and the field.
Later, in the 4×800 relay, Kellner and Conlan worked together, joined by Joey Frink and Jason Ekure as the Bees, in a time of 8:24.75, pulled away from C-NS (8:29.57) to win that event. Frink, on his own, got to third place in the 3,200-meter run in 10:18.70.
Sam Smith, seventh in the 110 high hurdles, battled for a victory in the 400-meter hurdles and, in 1:00.12, took second place to C-NS’s Ed Mahana (57.96 seconds), while Kenny Stehle was fourth in 1:01.96 on the Bees’ behalf.
Brennan LaQue rose to third place in the 400-meter dash in 52.54 seconds, where Evan Vannatta finished seventh in 53.44 seconds, just out of the points. LaQue, Vannatta, Andrew Carter and Kieren Sheriden to finish second (3:32.58) behind C-NS (3:31.39) in the 4×400 relay. Ryan Delola was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase 10:46.38), just ahead of Mike Boyce, Collin Spaulding and Denis Keegan, who manned the ninth through 11th spots.
Martin Sak was sixth in the triple jump (39 feet) and 10th in the 200-meter dash, but also paired with Evan Donhauser (who got bumped out of his specialty, the 110 hurdles, for pushing hurdles), Brandon Brown and Calvin Tanguay for fourth place in the 4×100 relay in 46.40 seconds. Dan Shorney took sixth (10 feet) in the pole vault, where Brad Krahl (9’6”) tied for eighth.
On the girls side, Hailey Couchman had quite a day, pulling away for a victory in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.77, with Indian River’s Emma Bonk (1:08.18) in the second spot. She also went 16 feet in the long jump, one inch better than C-NS’s Javielle Fanizzi (15’11”) for the title.
Rachael Miller, Katie Wicks, Anna Demer and Marissa Lathrop teamed to win the 4×400 relay in 4:07.38, well clear of Auburn (4:32.47) and the field. Brittany LaRock was the only competitor to clear 9 feet in the pole vault.
Couchman, LaRock, Laura Kick and Rebecca Lawrence took second (51.88 seconds) to Skaneateles (51.44 seconds) in the 4×100. Patricia Conlan, Maddie Dickter, Elizabeth Fawwaz and Sarah Rodman were third (10:44.43) in the 4×800 relay.
Fawwaz got second place in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:10.47 behind Cazenovia’s Meggie Hart (7:56.21) as Dickter finished fifth. Kaitlyn Asditt was fifth in the discus, heaving it 78’11”.

Two days earlier, it wasn’t quite as warm, but brilliant sunshine greeted B’ville as it took on Auburn and swept the Maroons – 97-44 on the boys side, 90-51 on the girls side.
Kellner pulled off a rare triple to lead B’ville’s boys to victory. Not only did he run the 800 in 2:04.1, he also was first in the mile in 5:13 flat and then, in the 3,200, earned a victory in 10:43.1.
Donhauser went 15.8 seconds in the 110 high hurdles, with Smith taking exactly one minute to win the 400 hurdles. Ethan Plouffe had a winning discus throw of 118 feet 6 ½ inches and also won the shot put (39’6”) as Shorney cleared 10 feet in the pole vault.
Couchman, who won the 400 hurdles in 1:09.3, later had a top long jump of 16’2 ½”, just as Haleigh Jaquint was going 31’11” in the triple jump and Brittany LaRock cleared 8’6” in the pole vault.
But the Bees built most of its winning margin on the track, where it swept the 4×100 (59.4), 4×400 (4:21.3) and 4×800 (11:05.2) relays as Lathrop, Lawrence, Dickter, Wicks, Demer, Kick, Conlan, Laura Brushingham, Kelley Hull, Claire McMahon, Katherine Siddall and Abigail Smith took part.
Lathrop, on her own, went 2:26.9 to win the 800-meter run. Adriana Slaughter was first in the 100-meter dash in 17.4 seconds, while Fawwaz went 11:41.0 to get a win in the 3,000-meter run.
