Each of Baldwinsville’s track and field teams got off to a rough start during last Wednesday’s pair of meets against Cicero-North Syracuse, but recovered in a big way three days later.
The Bees, competing at Saturday’s Tully Coed Spring Invitational, ended up at the top of both the boys and girls standings, scoring 141 points to pull away from Auburn (100.5 points) in the boys event and 107 points to edge Hannibal (105 points) for the girls title.
Going 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles, B’ville saw Sam Smith prevail in 1:02.73, while Mike Boyce edged out Fulton’s Dan Phillips, 1:06.22 to 1:06.92, for second place. In the 110 hurdles, Evan Donhauser won in 15.77 seconds, with Smith second in 17.31 seconds.
Arden Kellner, in the 800-meter run, prevailed in 2:02.09, while Brennan LaQue was fourth (2:06.40) and Evan Vannatta was fifth (2:07.79).
Winning three of four relays,, B’ville got it started in the 4×100, where Jake Wicks, Joe Klein, Caleb Carter and Calvin Tanguay posted 51.78 seconds, more than two seconds faster than Hannibal (53.87 seconds. Kellner, LaQue, Vannatta and Andrew Carter beat Auburn, 3:37.27 to 3:38.65, in the 4×400.
In the 4×800 relay, B’ville had no equal on this day, seeing Dan Conlan, Joey Frink, Mike Boyce and Denis Keegan get to first place in 8:48.09, with Hannibal (8:57.99) taking second. Conlan also got second in the mile in 4:44.27, just behind Auburn’s Joe Costello, who won in 4:42.93.
Wicks, Klein, Calvin Tanguay and Caleb Carter won the 4×100 weightman relay in 51.78 seconds, with the Bees third in the 4×100 sled pull in 1:07.84, less than a second behind Fulton’s 1:06.99. Ryan Delola was fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:44.09, while Collin Spaulding was fifth in 11:03.17.
Joe Klein got fourth in the discus, throwing it exactly 99 feet. Austin Catalano was third in the triple jump (36’8 ¾”) and Martin Sak was fourth, going 36’1”, while also taking fourth in the long jump with a top leap of 17’6” and fourth (24.29 seconds) over Andrew Carter (24.61 seconds) in the 200-meter dash. Mike Lagana was fourth and Brad Kahrl sixth in the pole vault, each clearing 9’6”.
Moving to the girls meet, Anna Miller was fifth and Kaitlynn Asditt were sixth in the shot put, with Miller unleashing a shot put toss of 26’11 ½” to also grab third place there.
Elizabeth Fawaz, Claire McMahon, Marissa Lathrop and Mia Bolton won the 4×800 rleay in 11:09.95, the field nearly a half a minute behind. Latrhop, Katie Wicks, Rebecca Lawerence and Hailey Couchman were victorious in the 4×400 relay in 4:11.60, with Oriskany (4:23.52) in second place, as the Bees added a third in the 4×400.
On her own, Couchman went 15’8” in the long jump, beating Jordan-Elbridge’s Rebekah Blonski (15’2”) by half a foot, and also won the high jump by topping 5 feet, four inches ahead of J-E’s Julie Hines. Kourtnee Allen was fifth in the high jump.
Haleigh Jaquint went to the triple jump and, going 29’5”, edged Fulton’s Callie Beckwith (29’4 ½”) by half an inch. Elizabeth Wicek was third (7 feet) in the pole vault. Rachael Miller won the 800-mter run in 2:24.49, more than 10 seconds clear of the field, a rarity in an event that short.
Destinee Luciano got to third place in the 400 hurdles in 1:18.60 and also was third in the 100 hurdles in 17.7 seconds, where teammate Adriana Straughter (18.50 seconds) managed to earn fifth place in the 100 hurdles. Lawrence was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 27.92 seconds.
Fawaz was third in the 3,000-meter run in 12:05.35, where Sarah Rodman was seventh and Nadine Dickter eighth. Bolton was fifth (5:34.92) and Emily McComb sixth (5:36.95) in the 1,500-meter run.
In the boys meet against C-NS at Bragman Stadium, the Bees made a few inroads, but not enough of them to threaten the Northstars, who prevailed by a score of 97-39.
Kellner gave B’ville a first-place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:10.5 amid a string of wins by C-NS in both individual and relay contests.
George Reader won three field events for the Northstars, taking the long jump (19 feet 7 inches), triple jump (40’9”) and high jump (5’6”), while Ed Mahana won the 110 high hurdles and 400 hurdles and Andrew Bearkland won the mile and 3,200-meter run.
Back at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium, B’ville’s girls track team had all kinds of trouble with C-NS, ending up on the wrong side of a 110-22 defeat.
Lawrence did win the 200-meter dash in 26.8 seconds, but the Northstars claimed every other individual event. Jilliann Norris, in the 800 (2:34.2) and 1,500 (5:24.4) meter runs, and Javielle Fanizzi, in the long jump (14’9”) and triple jump (29’5”), had two wins apiece.
