For a Baldwinsville boys soccer team hungry to make a push for yet another Section III Class AA championship, so much will get learned next Saturday night, when the regular season finishes at Swan Pond against state no. 4-ranked Fayetteville-Manlius.
In the meantime, the Bees’ task was to build up momentum for that game, a two-week process that commenced Oct. 3 with a 2-0 shutout over the same Liverpool team it lost to earlier in the season.
Then, in last Monday’s visit to Auburn, B’ville needed to be patient and wait until the second half to capitalize on a trio of set pieces to beat the Maroons 3-1.
Even though the Bees controlled the flow of play in the first half and held Auburn without a shot, it remained 0-0 thanks to six saves from Maroons goalie Austin Wansor.
All of that changed, though, just 2:24 into the second half, when B’ville got a corner kick and, amid a scramble in front of the net, Connor Ross poked it past Wansor to give his side a 1-0 lead.
Auburn replied midway through the second half on Emmet Mack’s nifty shot to the top left corner that Nick Lindovski could not stop, but even at 1-1 the Bees kept cool.
Less than four minutes later, getting a free kick at midfield, B’ville lobbed it into the middle, where Christian Fuller was able to fire a shot home for the go-ahead goal.
Up 2-1, the Bees kept pressuring until, with 2:41 left, it converted off another corner kick, Mark McCabe getting the goal. Alex Pompo and Erik Ferrari were credited with assists.
Off until Friday night, B’ville then hosted Corcoran on Senior Night, its last one before the Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium grass is converted to Field Turf next year.
And the Bees made it an unforgettable evening, crushing the Cougars 9-0. Putting together its highest goal total of the season, B’ville nearly reached double digits, gaining a 5-0 edge by halftime and continuing to roll in the game’s latter stages.
Pompo led the surge with a three-goal hat trick, plus an assist. Alex Anselment chimed in with a pair of goals, while Ferrari had a season-best three assists.
Evan Ingersoll earned one goal and one assist, with Nick Gates also scoring. Alex Burrer contributed a pair of assists, with Jason Ekure and Justin Stephenson adding their own assists.
This put the Bees at 10-3-1, with only Tuesday’s trip to West Genesee left to deal with before that long-awaited trek to Swan Pond and a chance to make another statement to F-M on the eve of the post-season.
