What the Skaneateles girls soccer team has discovered, hitting the midway point of its regular season, is that no opponent of any quality is going to make it easy for them.
During last Tuesday’s trip to Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, the Lakers suddenly found itself in a wild, back-and-forth second half, and were all too glad to escape with a 4-3 win over the Rebels.
Up 1-0 after a modest first half, Skaneateles suddenly found its defense vulnerable to a potent APW attack. In particular, the Rebels’ Kylie Bartlett, with her speed and athleticism, bruised the Lakers, scoring twice and assisting on Katie Palmer’s tally.
Still, Skaneateles had an answer every time for APW, getting two goals from Hannah Powers and a pair of assists from Tate Green as Lauren Goodchild and Molly Newton earned one goal apiece.
Before getting a second shot at Cazenovia (who rose to no. 2 in the state rankings before last Tuesday’s 2-1 overtime defeat to Westhill) this Thursday night at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, Skaneateles still had two more games to handle as a heavy favorite.
In the first of them, the Lakers went to Jordan-Elbridge on Thursday and smashed the Eagles 8-1, with Goodchild and Molly Newton each getting a pair of goals. Emmeline Graham and Hannah Powers found the net, too.
Then Skaneateles would play at Phoenix on Monday, likely to get a similar result and rest people for what followed – first Cazenovia, and then Westhill on Saturday afternoon. Winning this pair of games would push the Lakers right back to the top in the OHSL Liberty division.
