Both its 2-0 start, and the way it got to that point, helped the Baldwinsville football team gain a spot in the first state Class AA rankings of the season, and it might stay there for a while. The Bees improved to 3-0 on the season Friday night, when it breezed past Fowler 49-6 on the turf at Corcoran High School, mostly on the strength of a first half where it scored 36 unanswered points. Just two teams from Section III teams were part of that state poll – B’ville, at no. 21, and Henninger, at no. 13. The two Class AA-2 division leaders face each other Oct. 11 at Sunnycrest Field, but plenty of hurdles remain before their showdown. Fowler, off to an 0-2 start after getting pulled up from the Class AA ranks this fall, had lost to Utica Proctor and Henninger by a combined 95-16 margin, and would not prove a major hurdle for the Bees. Cameron Skipworth got B’ville on the board, scoring on a 26-yard run early in the first quarter. Quickly getting the ball back, the Bees moved to Fowler’s 19, from where Cole Burchill found the end zone. And Caleb Carter’s one-yard touchdown run made it 22-0 by the end of the period. Less than 90 seconds into the second quarter, the lead grew to 29-0 as Madison Wolfanger found Sam Smith for a 27-yard scoring pass. And the Bees put together one more TD drive before halftime, Ryan Ingerson reaching the end zone from 14 yards out. By the second half, B’ville was largely using its reserves. Skipworth, before exiting, gained 103 yards on seven carries, and Ingerson added 93 yards on eight carries, including a pair of third-quarter TD’s on runs of 19 and 34 yards. Sam Mahar had 68 yards on 10 carries and Josh Smith added 64 yards on 14 carries. Again, the Bees’ first-string defense did not allow a point. Jack Buis produced a team-best five tackles, with Calvin Tanguay adding four tackles. Skipworth produced an interception as Ethan Plouffe, Mark Lannier, Sam Thurston and Josh Greer had one sack apiece. For the third game in a row, the lone points scored by an opponent came in the fourth quarter, with the game out of reach, as Pat Myers threw a 34-yard scoring pass to Omar George. B’ville is back home next Friday night, facing Fayetteville-Manlius for a 6:30 kickoff. The Hornets, playing without injured senior quarterback Jake Wittig, are 1-2 following Friday’s 36-6 defeat to Henninger.
