With every point vital, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys track and field team managed to complete a Red Rams sweep of both Section III Class A-1 championships.

In Friday’s boys A-1 meet at Camden High School, the Red Rams picked up 139.5 points, needing them to fend off a fierce challenge from Indian River, who finished second with 130 points. East Syracuse-Minoa and CBA tied for fourth with 54 points.

So much of J-D’s main success came in field events, including the pole vault, where Zach Liebmann soared 14 feet 6 inches, the best clearance in Section III this season, as teammate Rob Murphy joined ESM’s Caiden Moynihan in clearing 11 feet and Jake Saletsky cleared 10’6” to finish sixth.

Dylan Volk won twice, including the long jump, where he had a top leap of 20’8”as no one else broke 20 feet, though teammate Will Cote (19’10”) was fourth. In the triple jump, Volk won by going 42’9 ¼”, the only attempt better than 42 feet, with Cote (38’10 ¾”) again getting fourth place.

For his part, Murphy cleared 5’10” in the high jump, the same as IR’s Shelton Williams, but finished second because Williams did so with fewer misses. Jesse Johnson (5’4”) tied for fifth.

Liebmann also rose to second place in the 100-meter dash in 11.81 seconds, trailing only IR’s Shane Davis (11.54 seconds), with CBA’s Tom SanGiacomo third in 11.83 seconds.

And in the 200-meter dash, Liebmann posted 23.55 seconds, again in second place to Davis (23.27 seconds), with SanGiacomo third in 23.58 seconds and ESM’s Chris Schiavone fourth in 23.98 seconds.

In the 4×100 relay, Liebmann, Volk, Sean Mulvihill and Will Cote were second in 45.25 seconds, with IR (44.89 seconds) prevailing here, too. Volk, Mulvihill, Cote and Austin Philleo were second in the 4×400 relay in 3:37.70, again with IR (3:33.45) topping them, and ESM (3:46.81) in fifth place.

Patrick Dye gave J-D a victory in the mile with a time of 4:39.88, just ahead of Whitesboro’s Tyler Sutton (4:40.96), while Nick Street was fourth in 4:49.39 and ESM’s Jared Henry was sixth.

Only in a couple of instances did ESM beat J-D head-to-head. One was in the 110 high hurdles, where Jeremy McGrath, in 16.65 seconds, held off Rob Murphy (16.97 seconds) for top honors, adding to the fourth-place finish McGrath got in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:01.38.

The other case came in the 3,200-meter run, as Dye went for a double – but the Spartans’ Jesee Perrone, in a time of 10:08.82, kept him from it, Dye settling for second place in 10:14.45. behind them, J-D’s Nick Street was fifth, in 10:34.52, and Henry again finished sixth for ESM.

Perrone, Nick Schug, Joe Coogan and Jake Barker finish second in the 4×800 relay in 8:15.07, just behind IR (8:14.75) at the line, with J-D’s quartet of Dye, Austin Philleo, Miles Chandler and Isaac Tupper third in 8:49.73.

CBA had three victories, two of them from Jack Brower. In the 400-meter dash, Brower Jack Brower bolted to first place in 50.79 seconds, more than a second clear of Watertown’s Shea LaManque (52.66 seconds), with Barker (53.55 seconds) getting fourth place for the Spartans.

Then, in the 800-meter run, Brower won again, going 2:02.04 to leave Whitesboro’s Nick Ashton (2:02.90) in the runner-up spot. Schug settled for seventh place. Also, in the shot put, Connor Agnew heaved it 46’8 ¼”, leaving Fulton’s Nick Reitz (45’5 ¾”) and the rest of the field behind.

J-D also saw Nolan Roosa take second place in the pentathlon with 2,285 points to Watertown’s Matt Olney (2,932 points), with CBA’s Nate Brower third with 2,197 points and ESM’s Connor Harrigan in fifth place.

The Red Rams’ Davis Elmore threw the discus 124’8”, grabbing third place. Murphy finished fifth in the shot put with a heave of 41’1”. Tupper was sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:57.16, behind the Spartans’ Matt Young (10:56.11) in fifth place, while CBA’s Tommy O’Connor took sixth in the 400 hurdles in 1:05.09.
