Many important things happened for the Baldwinsville track and field teams last week, none more so than the John Arcaro Invitational, held Friday at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
And not only did the Bees serve as gracious hosts, they exited as winners, scoring 193 points in the girls meet to outlast West Genesee (143 points) and six others, while earning 130 points in the boys meet as Cicero-North Syracuse (102 points) finished second in a 12-team field.
Cleaning up in sprints, the girls Bees saw Rebecca Lawrence take the 100-meter dash in 13.23 seconds, with Randi Bort second in 13.69 seconds. Bort took her turn in the 200-meter dash, edging teammate Shannon Lauko, 28.26 seconds to 28.64, while Cierra Allen went 59.70 seconds to hold off Katie Wicks (1:00.03) and win the 400-meter dash.
Mia Bolton, in a time of 8:35.3, was victorious in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, holding off West Genesee’s Grace Craig (8:38.1) for that top spot, with Nadine Dickter taking sixth place.
Kelley Hull was second in the 800-meter run in 2:28 flat, with Kirby Socker fifth in 2:36.46. Marissa Lathrop took third in the 1,500-meter run in 5:05.25, with Rachael Miller (5:05.91) getting fifth place. Shylea Dukat was fifth (12:17.07) in the 3,000-meter run.
Hannah Wood went 17.39 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, second to West Genesee’s Brianna Richardson (16.31 seconds), with Liz Wisely fifth in 17.70 seconds. Dominique LaPointe was third in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.68, with Maria McCaffrey (1:17.78) in fifth place.
Emily Soeder topped 5 feet 4 inches to win another high jump competition, with Bryn Judkins sixth. Brittany LaRock, clearing 8’3”, won the pole vault as Maria Diamond (7 feet) was third.
Carlie McNamara, throwing the discus 87’3”, won as Heidi Capria (72’1”) finished third, with McNamara also taking fourth in the shot put. Haleigh Jaquint, going 31’9 ¼” in the triple jump, finished second to Richardson (35’1”), while Jasmine Romano-Downs got to fifth in the long jump.
B’ville ran by itself in the 4×100 relay, but had competition in the 4×400, where Allen, Lathrop, Miller and Wicks won in 4:05.68, well clear of the field. Socker, Hull, Mia Bolton and Madison Gonzalez completed the relay sweep by winning the 4×800 in 10:33.95, holding off West Genesee (10:36.54) for that top spot.
During the boys meet, Jeff Mahar tore to a time of 51.35 seconds in the 400 sprint, winning that event as Brennan LaQue was third in 52.56 seconds. LaQue, Jeff Mahar, Brian Mahar and Dan Walker went 3:35.53 in the 4×400 relay, second to West Genesee (3:30.43) at the line, while the Bees also took fourth (8:49.80) in the 4×800 relay.
B’ville also swept the top spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where Jack Martin, in 10:15.9, pulled away from teammate Josh Perez, who was second in 10:51.6.
Evan Donhauser, with a time of 16.36 seconds, beat East Syracuse-Minoa’s Jeremy McGrath (16.48 seconds) in the 110 high hurdles, while Sam Smith finished third in 16.78 seconds, but Smith would save his best stuff for the 400 hurdles, winning in 1:00.71 over Oswego’s A.J. Vooris (1:01.72) and the field, with Kenneth Stehle in sixth place. Smith also was sixth in the triple jump.
Dante Giannino emerged victorious in the long jump, going 19’2 ¾” to hold off Watertown’s Matt Olney (19’1 ¼”). Mike Yorkey emerged in the discus to throw 118’5”, second to Indian River’s Tyler Wright (132’3”), while also getting third place in the shot put with a toss of 42’8”.
Ryan Delola, in 11:02.99, was second to C-NS’s Colin Greenseich (10:27.97) in the 3,200-meter run, with Colin Spaulding in fifth place. Connor Ross took fourth in the 800 in 2:08.96, with Braden Miles (2:10.40) sixth. Arden Kellner gained third place in the mile in 4:39.41. Brian Mahar was fifth in the 100 in 11.81 seconds.
Griffin Lynch, clearing 10’6”, was second in the pole vault to C-NS’s Mark Hentges (12’3”), with Bradley Krahl (9’6”) in sixth place.
Before all this, B’ville had to face C-NS in its last CNY Counties League National division meets of the regular season. In both instances, the Bees lost.
At home, the boys Bees lost, 89-52, to C-NS despite a relay sweep. Martin, Miles, Perez and Connor Ross rolled to first in the 4×800 relay in 8:27.10 to set the tone.
Then, in the 4×100, Walker, Connor Lunduski, Brian Mahar and David Mazurkiewicz roared to a victory in 46.1 seconds, while in the 4×100 Walker, joined by LaQue, Brian Mahar and Jeff Mahar, finished first in 3:32.9.
To counter that, C-NS won all of the field events and distance runs, only yielding in sprints, where Brian Mahar won the 100-meter dash in 11.4 seconds and 200-meter dash in 23 seconds flat and Jeff Mahar went 50.9 seconds to win the 400-meter dash.
As this was going on, the B’ville girls team took a 102-39 defea to C-NS at Bragman Stadium. It still managed to win two of three relays. Lawrence, LaRock, Allen and Sasha Bartelli took the 4×100 in 51.2 seconds, with Wicks, Miller, Hull and Carina Scalisle first in the 4×400 relay in 4:19.0.
But C-NS won every other event on the oval, with Sasha Pulaski taking the 100-meter dash (12.6 seconds) and 200-meter dash (26.6 seconds), with the Northstars also sweeping the distance runs and prevailing in four of five field events. Carlie McNamara did give B’ville a first-place finish in the discus, heaving it 97’3”.
