Through weeks spent in gymnasiums when they wanted to be outdoors, and then weeks waiting for the fields to dry and temperatures to warm, both the Skaneateles baseball and softball teams only grew more eager to begin their respective 2014 seasons.
Then more rain fell early last week, and by the time it was done, the Lakers had seen more games wiped out. All told, four games – against Cazenovia, Hannibal, Jordan-Elbridge and Altmar-Parish-Williamstown – fell by the wayside.
But it finally got dry enough for the Skaneateles baseball team to start on Saturday afternoon – but it had to face a Westhill team that already had a 4-0 mark, winning three times in the three days leading up to this opener.
That experience showed here, too, as the Lakers lost to the Warriors 8-0. At the plate, Skaneateles picked up five hits, one each by Nick Hyland, Collin Jones, Sepp Martin, Paul Musso and John Teixeira, but got none of them home against Westhill ace Sam Walsh, who struck out three.
Hyland pitched for the Lakers, going five innings, and gave up single runs in the first two innings before Westhill broke it open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Burton and Jesse Chester each had two hits and one RBI for the Warriors.
If the weather behaved, Skaneateles would take on Phoenix, Solvay and Tully this week, with the softball side also playing the Bearcats and Black Knights as each of them also look to make up those rained-out contests from before.
