Everyone got together for a great cause at Onondaga Nation Arena Friday night when Fayetteville-Manlius hosted its “Pink the Rink” event to promote breast cancer awareness.
The big crowd in Nedrow got to see an exciting twin bill, starting with CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt recording an impressive 5-1 victory over visiting Oswego, and continuing with F-M hosting Cicero-North Syracuse and taking a 2-1 loss to the Northstars.
Going first, CBA/J-D met the same Oswego side it beat last season in the Section III Division II final en route to a state championship, and this one didn’t require any comeback on the Brothers’ part.
Instead, it was a first-period scoring blitz that put CBA/J-D in control, as it roared out to a 3-0 lead before the Buccaneers could settle down.
Unable to keep up that sort of pace, the Brothers cooled down in the second period as Jake Oleyourryk’s goal cut the margin to 3-1, but two late insurance goals would help CBA/J-D get clear.
Sam Mueller scored twice as part of a deep, versatile Brothers attack. Braeden Doust, Jed Raby and Pete Dziergas also found the net, with Ryan McGuire earning a pair of assists. Tanner Coleman, Kyle Barker and Jamie St. Armour had one assist apiece as Tim Decker, in the net, stopped 24 of the 25 shots he faced.
Then F-M met a C-NS side still in search of its first win of the season, and it turned into a tense, exciting affair.
Through the first two periods, the Northstars and Hornets remained in a 0-0 stalemate, but in the third period F-M broke through as Mateo Capriotti scored his team’s lone goal, assisted by Ryan Daly and Daren Dunnewold.
However, C-NS answered as Chris Schneid and Newell Field scored goals, with Logan Field, Noah Koenig and Ben Cummings earning assists, and that proved enough. Ben Napierala, in defeat, made 20 saves, two less than Northstars counterpart Brandon Gloska.
Just when CBA/J-D wanted to capitalize on its 5-2 win over state-ranked New Hartford on Jan. 3, weather postponed last Tuesday’s visit to the Morrisville State IcePlex to face Cazenovia.
As the Brothers stewed, F-M looked for a turnaround last Wednesday against 6-3 Liverpool at the Greater Baldwinsville Ice Arena, but could not quite find it in a 4-3 defeat to the Warriors.
The problem for the Hornets was that, by the time it got on the board in the second period, Liverpool already had a 2-0 lead. And it would stay out in front during a tense final period by matching whatever F-M produced.
Dunnewold had a part in all of the Hornets’ scoring plays, scoring twice and assisting on Capriotti’s goal. Daly, Jake Dumond and Trevor Pokines joined Capriotti and Dunewold in the assist column.
For his part, Napierala made 28 saves, but even he could do little about Liverpool star Dalton Horton, who earned a three-goal hat trick, plus an assist. Tom Bianchi had a goal and three assists, with Kody Gaulke assisting on all three goals.
