Two Liverpool police officers put their heads together to gather enough evidence to charge a 24-year-old man with stealing from unlocked automobiles in the village.
On the night of Aug. 24 to 25, someone took money from two vehicles, $25 from a Toyota parked on Bass Street and change from a Chevrolet on Balsam Street. Both cars had been left unlocked.
That same night LPD Officer Don Craven questioned a suspicious young man loitering near Liverpool Cemetery.
“The man had several foreign coins in his pocket,” said Police Chief Don Morris. “Craven asked him where he got the Euros, and he couldn‘t provide an answer.”
The next day, one of the LPD’s newest hires, Officer Billy Gabriel, interviewed the vehicle owners and discovered that several Euro coins were among the missing money from the car.
The young man, Stephen Forbes, 24, of 7389 Palomino Path, was interviewed on Sept. 21 and admitted to the thefts, Morris said. On Sept. 24, Forbes was arraigned on two charges of petit larceny before Liverpool Justice Anthony LaValle, who remanded him to the Onondaga County Corbett Justice Center.
Liverpool Mayor Gary White, a former deputy chief in the Syracuse Police Department, commended the LPD for its work on the Forbes case and reminded residents to always lock their vehicles overnight. “And keep your valuables out of sight,” Whites added. “That’s the prudent thing to do.”
Two DWIs in September
Via a memo, Liverpool Police Chief Don Morris informed the village board at its Oct. 21 meeting that officers issued 109 citations for violations of the state’s vehicle and traffic laws during September.
In addition two arrests were made for driving while intoxicated and eight traffic accidents were investigated.
Officers made 180 residential checks during the month responding to 346 complaints or calls for service.
The LPD made 24 arrests last month on 36 criminal charges.
The trustees conditionally approved the hiring of a new part-time police officer, Marcus Lukins, who is finishing up his required course-work at the Public Safety Training Center at Onondaga Community College. Lukins could be in uniform here by Christmastime, Morris said.
