Going into Thursday night’s showdown with Westhill, the rematch of last November’s Section III Class B final, the Cazenovia boys soccer team is off to a solid start, only having one major hiccup on the path toward facing the Warriors. Each of the Lakers’ first three victories (against Rome Free Academy, Marcellus and Phoenix) were on the road, so Cazenovia fans didn’t get a chance to see them at the Sean Googin Sports Complex until last Tuesday’s home opener against Jordan-Elbridge. And Cazenovia did not disappoint, steadily putting away the Eagles 6-0. With a potent and diverse attack, the Lakers worked its way to a 3-0 halftime lead, and then doubled that total in the last 40 minutes of play. Henry Mann’s hot start continued, as he and Kevin Porter both scored twice. Ted Dwyer and Will Fellows earned the other goals, with Ryan Henderson and Eli LaGorga picking up a pair of assists. Evan Cornell also had an assist. This was Cazenovia’s only home game until the Westhill showdown. So that meant going back to the road, starting Thursday afternoon at Solvay, where the Lakers waged an all-out attack that didn’t bear immediate results, but still was enough to turn back the Bearcats 3-0. Constantly, Cazenovia charged at the net, only to be turned back as Solvay goalkeeper Joe Reale had a sensational outing, ultimately earning 22 saves. It was only 1-0 at halftime, but the Lakers tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the late going. Again, Mann and Porter supplied the production, Mann scoring twice and Porter earning the other goal as Henderson, Peter Burr and Tom McNerney each got one assist. Cazenovia would have a non-league game at Cortland on Saturday morning. The early (10 a.m.) start time caused some concern – but the larger problem turned out to be the Purple Tigers, who proved that its own hot start wasn’t a fluke as, led by Justin Prentice, it slammed the Lakers 5-1. Mann got Cazenovia on the board in the first half, his goal assisted by Porter. Still, Cortland moved in front, 2-1, and kept the pressure on Laker goalie Garrett Clabeaux throughout the second half, never letting the visitors organize any attempt to catch up. And though Clabeaux finished with 10 saves, he couldn’t stop Prentice, who notched two goals and assisted on two others as Cortland improved its own mark to 5-1. At least the Lakers would get a chance to rest, recuperate and practice on all of its possible issues before facing Westhill, followed by a tough Saturday non-league test against Class C power Manlius-Pebble Hill.
