Doug Pickney carded a top-five finish as the Skaneateles boys golf team finished third in Monday’s Section III Class B championship tournament at Oneida’s Kanon Valley Country Club.
With a total of 441, the Lakers finished ahead of most of the 10-team field. Westhill repeated its sectional team title, though, as with a 418 it edged runner-up Cazenovia by two shots.
Pickney figured out Kanon Valley to the tune of an 18-hole score of 82. That tied him with Westhill’s Nate Miesner and Cazenovia’s Trevor Gatzke for fourth place.
That put Pickney just two shots behind Matt Schaffner, another Cazenovia golfer, who was second. The entire field trailed Canastota’s Ian Campbell, whose 74 gave him medalist honors by six shots.
A day later, the girls Section III golfers held their championship tournament at Kanon Valley, and Kelsey Fenner came close to earning a state tournament berth.
To get there, a girl had to shoot an 87, and Fenner was just three shots from that mark, finishing with a 90 to earn a tie for 14th place in a field of 97 golfers. Madison Singler finished with a 112, while Brittany Welch posted a 121.
Auburn’s Larissa Carter, a day after a surgery on her left arm, still won the individual championship, with a 75, by one shot over Carter’s seventh-grade teammate, Lindsay May. Carter earned a spot in the Symetra Tour’s Credit Union Classic in late July at Drumlins Country Club’s East course.
