Through the heavy rain and snow that covered Central New York in the early part of April, both of the Skaneateles golf teams could only manage sporadic outdoor practice sessions.
Still, when league play finally got underway, both of the Lakers’ sides were victorious last Monday afternoon, including a boys team that went to Tuscarora Golf Club and delivered a 212-227 victory over main rival Marcellus.
Battling lots of wind, Doug Pinckney, Matt Lee and Nick Lee all shot matching nine-hole totals of 41 at Tuscarora, while Mike Jorgenson earned a 42. The Mustangs’ Brennan Files also had a 42, but far less help around him.
The girls Lakers were also successful, turning back East Syracuse-Minoa 236-267 at Skaneateles Country Club. Kelsey Fenner fought through the conditions and shot a 47, eight shots better than any ESM player.
They both played again in Tuesday’s rain, both facing Westhill at SCC. The girls Lakers won by a comfortable 192-210 margin, mainly because of Fenner’s superb round of 44, which beat the Warriors’ top player, Amanda Morrisey, by four shots. Grace Magee and Brittany Welch brought ample support, each of them shooting 50, while Madison Singler stepped up with a 42.
But the Skaneateles boys lost, 215-219, to that same Westhill side. Pickney, shooting a 40 at SCC, tied the Warriors’ Andy Vadnais for low individual round as Nick Lee picked up a 41, but the Warriors’ third, fourth and fifth players did a bit better.
In its third match in as many days, the boys Lakers beat Solvay 214-232 on Wednesday afternoon. This time it was Matt Lee, with a 40, setting the individual pace and Nick Lee close behind with a 41, both of them helped by Pinckney, who had a 43, five shots ahead of the Bearcats’ top player, Jimmy Farella.
Skaneateles made it back-to-back girls wins as Fenner led a 228-247 decision over Marcellus. Fenner’s nine-hole total of 44 at SCC was 10 shots better than the Mustangs’ top performer, Avery Mordaunt, with Magee stepping up to shoot a 54.
Then the Lakers split Friday’s match with CBA and Chittenango at Woodcrest. Fenner shot a 40, best among individuals, as Skaneateles, with a 207, beat the Bears’ total of 221, but was behind the Brothers as it won with 196.
