At last, the Baldwinsville track and field teams were able to spring into action, even if “spring” conditions were nowhere to be found.
Instead, the Bees faced wind, 40-degree temperatures and rain during Friday’s Cicero-North Syracuse Relays, but still managed to finish second on the boys side and fourth on the girls side.
B’ville’s boys team had 48 points, topping everyone except the hosts from C-NS, who prevailed with 66.33 points. Ten of those points came in the 1,600 sprint medley relay, where Jeff Mahar, Dan Walker, Brian Mahar and Nate Wicks needed three minutes, 44.18 seconds to hold off CBA (3:46.85) and the rest of the field.
Alec Peinkofer ran the mile in 4:25.47, second among 81 individuals, with Josh Perez fourth (4:32.03) as the Bees, team-wise, were second (18:25.88) to Rush-Henrietta (18:14.30), Peinkofer and Perez joined by Andy Fleming and Jack Martin.
Chad McCardell and Richard Buck took third in the 110 high hurdles with combined times of 35.92 seconds. Sean Maar, Jeff Schnackel, Steve Keegan and Brendan LaQue moved to third in the 4×400 relay in 3:48.65.
Shawn Calnan cleared 5 feet 10 inches in the high jump, bettered only by Corcoran’s Charles Stokes (6 feet), as Calnan and Noah Meyers cleared 11 feet between them to finish second on the team side.
Sam Smith and Shawn Calnan combined for third in the triple jump, going 73’5” between them. Pat McNamara and Tom Ancilotti were fourth in the discus with total throws of 209’8”. The Bees were eighth in the 400 hurdles, ninth in the shot put and 10th in the 4×800.
In the girls portion of the C-NS Relays, the Bees had more points – 48.5 – but that only meant fourth place, behind the Northstars (82 points), Liverpool (58 points) and Rush-Henrietta (56 points).
The Bees would not get topped in the 4×100 relay as Stephanie Vasteno, Angelica Tomasello, Cierra Allen and Gabby Jordan needed just 52.04 seconds to beat West Seneca West (53.17 seconds) and the rest of the field.
Carlie McNamara won the individual discus throw, her heave of 91 feet 4 inches more than three feet better than Jamesville-DeWitt’s Tangela Hightower (88’3”) as McNamara and Erin Knaul were third (148’) among duos.
Over in the high jump, Emily Soeder won the individual event by clearing 4’10” with fewer misses than Liverpool’s Tammy Brodie, with Soeder and Kayleigh Bates tying C-NS for second place among teams with 8’10”, two inches worse than Liverpool (9’) at the wire.Melissa Voyer and Maddie Darstein tied for fifth in the long jump with 28’3”.
Allen returned to help Marissa Lathrop, Mackenzie Ross and Elsie Seifritz as the Bees were second (4:28.89) to Liverpool (4:25.83) in the 1,600 sprint medley. B’ville was also third in the 4×400 relay, where Lathrop, Ross, Emily McComb and Katie Wicks posted 4:24.72 and the Bees added a third-place clocking of 10:35.23 in the 4×800.
Hannah Wood and Ashley Pesano were fifth (38.42 seconds) in the 100 hurdles. Rachael Miller, Emily Thompson, Julia Johnson and Hannah Olds got fifth in the mile relay in a total time of 23:41.70. Danielle Piontowski and Kim Cushman were in the 400 hurdles, taking sixth place in 2:42.46.
B’ville will take on West Genesee Wednesday afternoon – the boys at home, the girls in Camillus – with the girls sides moving on to Friday’s East Syracuse-Minoa Invitational.
