Though the Cazenovia girls volleyball team’s Sept. 7 defeat to Skaneateles at Buckley Gym proved a bit discouraging, it did start a stretch of home matches at Buckley Gym where the Lakers had time to reclaim its winning form.
And the Lakers did so. Phoenix showed up Tuesday night and split the first two sets before Cazenovia prevailed in four.
Following an easy 25-13 win in the opening set, the Lakers got a bit sloppy, and the Firebirds claimed the second set 25-20. Then Cazenovia rolled through another 25-13 decision in the second set before a fourth set that proved tight, but still went 25-22 in the hosts’ favor.
Amber Robinson again did everything on the court, from 13 digs to nine assists, five kills and four aces. Defensively, she got help from Samantha Prossner and Dominique Lyons, who put up 10 digs apiece. Up front, Madison Gabor had six kills, while Kaitlyn Puukila added five kills. Stacia Valik had four assists.
Homer would pay a visit on Thursday night, but the Lakers put together its most impressive effort so far, rolling to another sweep as it took the first set 25-17, bashed the Trojans 25-14 in the second set and closed it out 25-22 in the third set.
By the time it was done, Robinson had 11 kills and 12 assists, plus eight digs and three aces. Gabor was strong, too, with seven kills and 11 digs, while Prossner had 10 digs and four kills. Lyons served up six aces and gained nine digs as Puukila had four kills and Valik managed six assists.
As part of an upcoming stretch of three matches in four days, Cazenovia would welcome fall newcomer Jamesville-DeWitt on Tuesday, in between trips to West Genesee and LaFayette.
