Liverpool’s boys golf team earned its first win of the season last Wednesday when it went to Brooklawn and put together a 203-210 victory over the combined Syracuse city squad, the start of a memorable four-day stretch where Karl Deuble was the featured performer.
At Brooklawn, Deuble and John Rojek had matching rounds of 40, tying Syracuse’s Tyler Sniffen for low individual honors. The Warriors also saw Dan Calabria, Anthony Cabrey and Mike Gabriel tie with totals of 41.
A day later, the Warriors hosted a three-way match at Liverpool Country Club where it shot 204, just behind both Auburn (198) and Oswego (191) when they were added up.
By far, Deuble had the most impressive individual round, shooting a three-under-par 33, but none of his teammates broke 40 as Rojek landed on that number. Nikita Rosenblum led the Maroons with a 37, the same score as the Buccaneers’ Alec Kunzwiler.
When Liverpool met West Genesee Saturday, also at LCC, Deuble again showed his brilliance, and it was the difference in a narrow 200-201 victory over the Wildcats.
Matched up with WG star John Clare (who tied for sixth in last June’s state tournament in Ithaca), Deuble again shot a 33, his three under total one better than Clare – and that was the winning margin. Gabriel shot 39 in support, with Rojek adding a 40. Jack Hobble had a 42 and Andrew Salamino contributed a 46.
Part of the fun of having two golf teams, as they do at Cicero-North Syracuse, is that a couple of times each season they get to face each other.
Such was the case last Wednesday afternoon, when the Blue and Green sides from C-NS met at Beaumont Country Club, and C-NS Blue prevailed by a score of 193-215.
Four of the C-NS Blue players broke 40 for nine holes, led by Eric Hamilton, who had a 37. Cameron George contributed a 38 as Derek Teague and Cory Piper both shot 39 and Joey Petrin produced a 40.
On the C-NS Green side, Eddie Szopinsk, who shot a 41, led a well-balanced effort. Brad Hamilton, Eric Cummings and Paul Haberek each finished at 43, with John Myers posting a 44.
Still at Beaumont on Thursday, C-NS Blue turned around and beat the combined Syracuse city squad 186-212. Joey Petrin stepped to the forefront with a 35 as Teague and Mike Mento each shot 37. Piper had a 38 and Jon Petrin produced a 39.
