Now add Jamesville-DeWitt to the list of volleyball programs making the transition from the winter to the fall.

For the Red Rams, though, the twist is that both the girls and boys teams are switching, and will face wildly different schedules. J-D’s girls play within a growing Onondaga High School League, while the boys will play almost exclusively against Class AA squads from the CNY Counties League.

It took only two matches for the Rams to reach the win column, claiming its first fall decision Thursday night in a five-set thriller over Solvay.

J-D won a tight opening set 25-23. After the Bearcats took the second set 25-20, the Rams dominated the third set 25-12, only to give up the advantage again as Solvay prevailed 25-18 in the fourth set.

Finally, the Rams took charge in the decisive fifth set, winning it 25-15 as Kristina Gitzen and Megan Neugebauer each finished with 10 kills, while Laura Wildridge had eight kills and three blocks.

Jenna Hayward contributed everywhere with seven aces, six kills and nine digs, with Madi Alfieris setting up points through her 32 assists, plus five kills. Jackie Halpin earned four digs.

The big fall debut for the J-D girls took place Tuesday night, against Homer, and it went to four sets before the Rams fell to the Trojans.

Fired up by the occasion, J-D nearly snatched the opening set, but Homer prevailed 25-23. That confidence spilled over into the second set, when the Rams did win 25-18 to briefly even it up.

Homer took over from there, winning the third set 25-18 and the fourth set 25-17 as Emma Gutchess (21 assists), Anni Wynn and Hannah McEvoy (eight kills each) led the visitors.

Alfieris finished with 27 assists. Hayward led both sides with 13 kills as Wildridge (seven kills), Gitzen (six kills) and Neugebauer (six kills) helped out. On the defensive side, Olivia Jasinski had seven digs and Meghan Byrnes added six digs.

Fayetteville-Manlius, who has played in the fall ever since the Class AA sides moved there in 2006, began its 2012 season by going to Central Square and proving quite steady in a 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 sweep of the Red Hawks.

On the back line, Lauren Carey, in addition to her 27 assists (an average of nine assists per set), kept points going with six digs, tying teammate Jessica Palmeiro. Up front, Ivanka Temnycky led the Hornets with 12 kills, adding three digs as Delaney Fuller got seven kills. Madisen Poster had three kills and three blocks.

However, the Hornets lost Thursday to Oswego in four sets 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-17. After splitting the opening two sets, the close nature of the third set swung the match’s momentum in the Buccaneers’ favor.

Carey still had 31 assists and 14 digs. Working up front, Temnycky finished with 14 kills, adding four blocks and seven digs, while Lily Palmer posted 10 kills and 13 digs. Poster contributed six kills.
