Nine long days passed between the Baldwinsville baseball team’s 2-0 shutout of Oswego and its return to action Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse.
Yet the unanticipated layoff did nothing to slow down the Bees, who again got a strong pitching performance, from Scott Blewett, and beat the Northstars 4-1.
B’ville’s fast start had placed them at no. 7 in the latest state Class AA rankings. But the wet, cold weather halted things for a while, as a first attempt to face C-NS, plus two different attempts to host defending Class AA champion Liverpool, got postponed.
At last, the weather cleared on Saturday, and the Bees sent Blewett to face C-NS left-hander Kyano Cummings, a strong pitching match-up that, on this day, went in Blewett’s favor.
Immediately, B’ville went to the lead, scoring single runs in the first and second innings. When Cummings left in the fifth in favor of reliever Will Apps, the Bees got to him, too, with runs in the sixth and seventh.
No doubt, poor defense by C-NS helped, as the Northstars made four errors. But Brett Charbonneau and Zach Leo each got a pair of hits, while Josh Demoski scored a run and drove in another. Josh Savacool, Colin Conklin and Jimmy Schmidt also scored runs.
Blewett didn’t need too much help, though. The sophomore held a deep, potent C-NS lineup to four hits, four walks and a single run in the fifth inning, recording four strikeouts and, more importantly, getting error-free defense around him.
This leads to Wednesday’s third try at getting in the game against Liverpool, just before contests late this week against Rome Free Academy and Rochester McQuaid.
