Back from its work in Florida during the April school break, the Baldwinsville baseball team was eager to show local opponents the sharpness it picked up in the warmer weather.
First, the Bees went to Falcon Park last Monday afternoon and, with two big early rallies, took control against Auburn, eventually beating the Maroons 13-6.
A five-run second inning put B’ville ahead to stay, but it added five more runs in the fourth, eventually pounding out 16 hits and taking advantage of six Auburn errors.
Brett Charbonneau and Connor Martin both managed three hits, scored a combined three runs and teamed up for three RBIs. Jake Norton and Josh Demoski both picked up two hits and two RBIs.
Gabe Levanti managed a pair of hits and scored three runs as he, along with Charbonneau, Josh Savacool and Scot Blewett, earned one RBI apiece. Zach Leo joined Martin as they each scored a pair of runs. Scott Blewett pitched six solid innings to earn the win.
Just 24 hours later, B’ville made it back-to-back wins, meeting the combined Syracuse West (Corcoran/Fowler) squad and again prevailing, this time in a 7-1 decision.
An early 1-0 deficit vanished when the Bees scored twice in the top of the third inning. It stayed 2-1 until the sixth, when a five-run outburst decided matters.
Leo tripled, scored twiceand earned two RBIs, part of a balanced lineup. B’ville had 10 hits from nine different players, only Martin getting two hits as he, along with Charbonneau and Josh Savacool, managed one RBI. Levanti added a triple.
Meanwhile, Colin Conklin had an impressive showing on the mound, going the route as he held Syracuse East to four hits, striking out eight while allowing a trio of walks.
B’ville got yet another pitching gem from Scott Orr in Thursday’s game against Oswego, and needed it so that the Bees could beat the Buccaneers 2-0.
What was a 0-0 game turned in the bottom of the third, when B’ville got to Oswego pitcher Tom Dillon for both of its runs. Charbonneau drove in Savacool, and then raced around to score to double the margin.
That was enough for Orr, who in six innings of work gave up six hits and three walks, but struck out five and continually escaped trouble through solid defense. Blewett worked a perfect seventh inning for the save.
And this sets up big back-to-back games next week, as B’ville visits Cicero-North Syracuse on Monday and returns home Wednesday to take on defending Class AA champion Liverpool.
