Quickly, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team has let opponents know that it won’t be easy to put up goals against them.
The Lakers have allowed just 18 in the first three games, including Thursday’s 9-7 victory over Westhill at the Sean Googin Sports Complex which moved Cazenovia to 2-1 on the season.
Even in a season-opening 5-4 defeat to Marcellus on April 2, the Lakers were stingy, and that has carried over into its ensuing contests, as Westhill (who put up 16 in a win over Marcellus two days after Cazenovia had faced them) soon found out.
From the start, the Lakers broke up the Warriors’ attack, limiting its shots while staying patient on the other end, waiting for good chances. That translated into a 4-3 halftime lead and Westhill’s inability to respond with a sustained run.
When offense was required, Becca Wheeler stood out with three goals, while Colleen Dougherty and Emmajean Speer both found the net twice. Kayla Dorrance contributed three assists as she and Emily Willard got single goals.
Cazenovia remains at home this week for games against the combined Bishop Grimes/Bishop Ludden entry and Onondaga.
