Nora Barry is already playing a starring role at Florida – but the Marcellus girls lacrosse team she left behind is doing just fine.

The Mustangs, who never could rise to the top of the Section III Class C ranks despite Barry’s brilliance, still has plenty of talent on hand, as seen in wildly varying season-opening wins in the last days of March.

Marcellus had no trouble in last Wednesday’s opener against Clinton, doing whatever it wanted on the offensive side on its way to a 19-2 victory over the Warriors.

Even as it gave up a couple of first-half goals, the Mustangs piled up goals on the other end, not letting up until it had put together a 12-2 advantage. A second-half shutout, with more production, followed.

Grace Nolan finished with four goals and two assists. Molly McGuane also found the net four times, with Emily Hennigan and Grace Hunt managing three goals apiece. Maura Gosson found the net twice. Audrey Cerrone had a goal and two assists as Lexi Bird and Teresa Finn scored, too.

Things were different Friday night, at Cicero-North Syracuse, where the Mustangs were in early trouble, but dug out of it in the late going and edged past the Northstars 10-9.

Under fire throughout the first half, Marcellus fell behind, 7-4, watching as C-NS’s Caitlyn Hamilton worked her way to three goals, Sarah Bowles and Tiffany Ryan adding two goals apiece.

Yet the Mustangs’ defense tightened after the break, forcing turnovers and seeing veteran goalie Renee Poullott make 13 saves, two more than C-NS counterpart Stefani Reynolds.

McGuane, with three goals and one assist, led the rally, while Nolan, Hunt and Bird each found the net twice. Alex Burrows got a single goal as Hennigan, Nolan and Hunt each had one assist.

Marcellus hosts Cazenovia on Monday and plays on Wednesday against Westhill, after which the team is away until an April 16 encounter with LaFayette.
